Opening Day 2017 details and schedule

Tomorrow is the day we Cardinals fans have been waiting for since the end of last season – Opening Day 2017! If you want to get technical, it’s actually Opening Night, since tomorrow’s game will be a 7:35 PM game.  There’s a full schedule of events happening tomorrow before the game even starts.  Although we do not have tickets to the game, we will be going to the pep rally.  I hope to do a Periscope from the pep rally tomorrow, so follow me on Twitter (you mean you don’t already?) so you can catch that.

There are lots of other changes at Busch Stadium this season, including some new security rules, so even if you’re not going to the game tomorrow, you may want to read that section so you’ll be prepared.  Here are all the details on tomorrow’s festivities:

2017 OPENING DAY IN ST. LOUIS — APRIL 2, 2017

125th Anniversary of Franchise Highlights Opening Day

A pregame ceremony that welcomes home the 2017 St. Louis Cardinals team, honors the club’s Hall of Famers, commemorates the great tradition of Opening Day in St. Louis and kicks off the Cardinals 125th anniversary in the National League will punctuate a day of activities celebrating the annual return of baseball on Sunday, April 2.  The Cardinals will take on the division rival Chicago Cubs in a 7:35 p.m. game on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball telecast.  Following is a schedule of official activities and information to help fans enjoy the unofficial holiday that is #OpeningDaySTL:

Pregame Schedule

12:00 – 2:00 p.m.: One Nation Pep Rally at Ballpark Village

Kick off the day with a St. Louis Blues Pep Rally on the outdoor Busch II Infield stage and adjacent parking lot!  Fun includes a mascot appearance by Louie from 12-12:30 p.m., a DJ from the stage, giveaways and additional Blues entertainment.  Enter Ballpark Village’s on-site giveaway by completing a data card by 1:30 p.m. for a chance to win an autographed jersey, puck or one of two autographed sticks.  One lucky winner will receive the ultimate #OneNation prize pack that will feature two tickets to both the Blues game vs. Nashville at 3:00 p.m. and to Opening Day to see the Cardinals take on the Cubs at 7:35 p.m. on the Budweiser Brew House Rooftop deck.

2:00 – 4:45 p.m.:  Opening Day Pep Rally at Ballpark Village

Join Kyle McClellan, FOX Sports announcers and DJ Todd Thomas at the outdoor Busch II Infield stage and adjacent parking lot for the Cardinals Opening Day Pep Rally.  This event is free for all fans to attend and will proceed rain or shine.  Fredbird and Team Fredbird will be on hand to give away Opening Day tickets and other Cardinals prizes.  Food and drinks will be available for purchase as well.

5:05 p.m.:  Gates Open           

2017 Cardinals Magnet Schedule: All ticketed-fans, ages 21 and older, will receive a magnet featuring the 2017 Cardinals schedule, compliments of Budweiser.

5:05 – 7:35 p.m.: Opening Day Pre-Game Party at Cardinals Nation 

Cardinals Nation will host the Official Pre-Game Party of the St. Louis Cardinals.  This ticketed pep-rally style party is located on the second floor of Cardinals Nation in the Hall of Fame Club, two and a half hours prior to every Cardinals home game during the 2017 season.  The exclusive pre-game event includes a full buffet menu, all-inclusive bar and a DJ or live music all the way until first pitch.  Tickets for the Opening Day Official Pre-Game Party are currently sold out.  Tickets for future Pre-Game Parties can be purchased at cardinals.com/pregame, at any Busch Stadium box office or at the Cardinals Museum.

6:30 p.m.:  Homers For Health Game Ball Relay from Cardinal Glennon to pitcher’s mound by Bruce Sutter. 

6:45 p.m.:  Pregame ceremonies begin with an appearance by the famed Budweiser Clydesdales.

Introductions of St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger, St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay and Missouri Governor Eric Greitens.

Introductions of Fredbird and Team Fredbird.

Hall of Famers will be introduced via a Ford Motorcade around the warning track. Each Hall of Famer will be riding in a 2017 Ford Mustang convertible.

Introduction of 2016 Cardinals Hall of Fame Induction Class.

Introduction of Cardinals principal owner and CEO, Bill DeWitt Jr.

Cardinals 125th Anniversary / There’s Only One Cardinals Baseball Video

Introduction of the 2017 St. Louis Cardinals via Ford Motorcade. The players will ride in 2017 Ford F-150 Raptors.

Introduction of the Chicago Cubs.

Watching on TV

Fans can watch the pregame ceremony in High Definition on FOX Sports Midwest beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The game will also be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Radio Coverage

Fans can tune into KMOX (1120 AM) or one of the 155 stations in the Cardinals Radio Network to hear Mike Shannon and John Rooney call the game.  The expanded pregame show starts at 5:55 p.m.

Online or On The Go

Fans may also follow the game for free on cardinals.com using the Gameday application or via the team’s Twitter account (@Cardinals).  Fans can keep tabs on the score from their mobile device using MLB’s mobile app, At Bat 17.

Opening Day Ceremonies will be streamed live on the FOX Sports GO app and at FOXSportsGo.com, available to customers of participating pay television providers who receive FOX Sports Midwest, FOX Sports South & FOX Sports Southwest Plus (in Cardinals territory).

#CapsOn for Opening Day

The Cardinals and Major League Baseball are celebrating Opening Day by encouraging all baseball fans to wear caps on Opening Day whether they are attending the game, going to work or watching from home.  Show your support for the Redbirds on April 2 by wearing your Cardinals cap no matter where you are and posting a photo to social media with the hashtag#CapsOn.

Getting To The Game

Per the Missouri Department of Transportation, motorists should be aware of the following on-going road closures:

I-44, St. Louis City, one lane closed westbound I-44/southbound I-55 from the Poplar Street Bridge to Park through July.

I-44, St. Louis City, one lane closed westbound Poplar Street Bridge to southbound I-55/westbound I-44 through July.

I-44, St. Louis City, the ramp from 7th Street to westbound I-44 is closed through July.

I-55, Jefferson County, one lane closed northbound I-55 at Route Z through April 3.

As usual, Clark Street will be closed in between the stadium and Ballpark Village.

Alternative Transportation

MetroLink is a convenient alternative to driving.  To avoid the traffic congestion and the cost of parking on game days, fans can use one of 21 free Park-Ride lots along the MetroLink line and take the train to Stadium Station, right across the street from the ballpark.  MetroLink will have additional security and personnel located throughout the light rail system to assist passengers on Sunday.  MetroLink will also be monitoring platforms for crowds and will add extra trains to service as need.  Check the Metro’s website MetroStLouis.org or download the Metro On The Go mobile app for schedules and Park-Ride lots nearest you.

There are also plenty of buses in Missouri and Illinois that will get fans to Busch Stadium including the Redbird Express that departs from the Water Tower at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights, Illinois.  On Opening Day, the Redbird Express bus will leave at 5:00 p.m.  MetroBus is another great option for getting to downtown St. Louis on Sunday.  Fans can catch the #40 Broadway or #99 Downtown Trolley, which both have stops near Busch Stadium.

Update on Prohibited Items & Bag Inspection Policy

Fans are still allowed to bring their own food and beverages into Busch Stadium for all 81 games.  However, there are some items that will no longer be permitted to be brought through the gates.  Outside cups (e.g. fast food/gas stations cups), mugs and thermoses are prohibited.  All drinks must be factory sealed, in clear plastic bottles no larger than two (2) liters.

Multi-compartment backpacks are no longer permitted inside the ballpark.  Duffel bags, tote bags, cinch bags, diaper bags and purses no larger than 16” x 16” x 8” are still allowed.  Additionally, ice packs are prohibited unless required for a medical condition.  Fans can still bring loose ice to keep food and beverages cold. Ballpark Improvements for 2017

A number of physical improvements have been made within Busch Stadium to improve the fan experience:

Perficient Red Jacket Club: Busch Stadium’s newest all-inclusive area, the Perficient Red Jacket Club is located on the suite level down the right field line and will accommodate both individual and group purchases with a capacity of 115 tickets.  The club features a bright, contemporary design and décor highlighting and honoring Cardinals Hall of Famer.  Ticket holders will have exclusive access to a private climate controlled indoor lounge, reserved outdoor seating, a complimentary full service bar featuring mixed drinks, beer, wine and Coca-Cola products and an upscale, all-you-can-eat buffet.  To purchase tickets or for more information, visit cardinals.com/redjacketclub.

Family Pavilion: The Family Pavilion, located in centerfield, has undergone a complete remodel.  The newly designed family area will feature a Kids Kitchen concession stand featuring kid sized portion along with exclusive menu options such as animal crackers and Rice Krispie treats.  The new Family Pavilion will also feature a Virtual Reality area with interactive games, a toddler play area, a play structure that will circulate out into the concourse, an updated speed pitch cage and a mother’s nursing room.

New Audio: 150 speakers were installed throughout the ballpark in order to bring game audio and public announcements to various parts of the stadium.  Game audio will be heard throughout the main concourse, the suite levels and the loge level.  New sound systems were installed in the Ford Plaza, Riverview Corner in right field and the Left Field Pavilion as well.

Broadway Market: A second grab-and-go shop has been added in front of the Gate 6 entrance.  The self-serve, pay at the register store gives fans the option to purchase a variety of soda, beer, water, dry snacks, novelty ice cream, and premade sandwiches and salads in a quick and efficient manner without having to wait in concession lines.

Legends Club (Party Suites): Fans that purchase all-inclusive Legends Club Suite tickets will now have access to complimentary full service bars that will include mixed drinks, wine and craft beers.  Additionally, the Suite Level hallways and entrances to the Legend Club Suites have been remodeled and feature additional overhead lightning and Cardinals-theme artwork on the walls.

Protective Netting:  The protective netting behind home plate has been extended to the ends of each dugout closest to the outfield wall.  Previously the netting extended to the end of the dugout closest to home plate.

New Grass: Fresh new Kentucky Bluegrass was installed on the field in February.  The grass was grown in Fort Morgan, Colorado.

AT&T Coverage: AT&T has boosted their mobile internet coverage at Busch Stadium this off-season, adding 60% more network capacity compared to last year’s Opening Day.  This will give AT&T customers a better wireless experience inside the ballpark.

New Concessions

Delaware North Sportservice, the club’s concessionaire for more than 50 years, is preparing to welcome fans back to Busch Stadium.  Delaware North Executive Chef Larry Johnson and his culinary team have developed a few new menu items for the 2017 season, including:

Deluxe Sausages: Three different 1/3 pound links including our Old World Bratwurst, served with sauerkraut; our mild Italian Sausage, served with sautéed peppers and onions; and our medium heat Chorizo, served with sautéed peppers and onions.  All deluxe sausages are served exclusively at our “Crowd The Plate” stand in Section 148 and can be purchased a la carte for $9 or as a combo with tater tots for $14.25.

The Redbird: The winner of our Fan Food Challenge, the Redbird is a crispy breaded chicken breast, tossed in buffalo wing sauce, topped with Provel cheese and served on an egg Kaiser roll.  The Redbird will be served exclusively at our “Double Play Tap & Grill” stands located in Section 135 and the Perficient Perch in Section 359.  Served with tater tots for $14.

New Cardinals Ballpark Pass

The Cardinals Ballpark Pass is a new ticket subscription service that gives fans the opportunity to attend as many Cardinals home games as they want each month for a monthly fee of $29.99.  Subscribers will have a Standing Room ticket to each regular season game (except Opening Day) digitally delivered to their smartphone via the MLB.com Ballpark app.  The subscription will automatically renew each month and subscribers can cancel at any time.  To purchase the Cardinals Ballpark Pass or for more information, visit cardinals.com/pass.

Introducing the Cardinals Nation Food Truck

Serving a combination of ballpark fare and unique culinary creations, the Cardinals Nation Food Truck will be located at 8th and Clark on game days, and will hit the streets around the city for lunch service.  The food truck menu consists of 10 entrée offerings including fan favorites from the Cardinals Nation Restaurant like the Cardinals Nation Nachos and Four Cheese Mac & Cheese, along with fun new selections such as Bacon Ribs and the Twisted Cheddar Brat.  In addition to taking part in local fairs and festivals, the food truck will be available for corporate and social events, catering and will be part of the Cardinals outreach throughout the St. Louis community.

New Retail at the Official Cards Team Store

New Cardinals-branded apparel and merchandise for 2017 is available at the Official Cardinals Team Store and at the 15 portable retail carts around the ballpark.  New on-field apparel includes Authentic Batting Practice Trainers by Majestic with player numbers on the sleeve.  New men’s and women’s apparel is also available from popular brands such as Columbia, Levis, johnnie-O, Tommy Bahama, Under Armour, Nike and Stance.

The Official Cardinals Team Store is also the exclusive brick and mortar retailer of Adam Wainwright’s “Waino’s World” t-shirt.  A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each shirt will be donated to Cardinals Care and Big League Impact.  The Team Store also offers a selection of nine different player replica home white jerseys from Majestic (Molina, Wainwright, Carpenter, Martinez, Fowler, Piscotty, Diaz, Grichuk and Oh).  The Cardinals Team Store continues to offer hat embroidery and personalized jerseys and has a vast array of merchandise sizes from newborn to big and tall and everything in between.  The Official Cardinals Team Store is open daily from 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Cardinals Authentics Shop

Fans can visit one of the two Cardinals Authentics locations (inside Cardinals Nation and at Busch Stadium in Ford Plaza) to shop for authentic Cardinals gear and to take home a piece of the game.  Cardinals Authentics specializes in official, game-used, limited edition and autographed memorabilia direct from the club.  Both shops offer a great selection of current and vintage Cardinals apparel, as well as one-of-a-kind collectibles.  The Cardinals Nation location is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (April-October) and 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (November-March).  On game nights, the Busch Stadium shop will remain open 30 minutes after last pitch while the Cardinals Nation shop will remain open for one hour after last pitch.

 Cardinals Authentics will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 World Series Championship team by offering autographed pictures, baseballs and other memorabilia from Mike Shannon, Orlando Cepeda, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson and Red Schoendienst including a framed, limited edition, enlarged print of a World Series Game 4 ticket signed by all five players and a limited number (#’d to 67) of autographed and inscribed baseballs by Bob Gibson celebrating his three World Series wins.  Cardinals Authentics will also commemorate the 125th anniversary of the franchise with unique collectible items as well.

Cardinals Hall of Fame & Museum

Earlier this month, Steve Carlton, Keith Hernandez, Jason Isringhausen, Tim McCarver, Mark McGwire, Edgar Renteria and Scott Rolen were revealed as the seven players nominated for possible induction into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.  The seven modern ballot nominees were selected by a “Red Ribbon” committee of Cardinals baseball experts through a secret ballot process and appear on the Cardinals Hall of Fame ballot online at cardinals.com/HOF presented by Edward Jones (#CardsHOF).  The two players with the most online fan votes after voting concludes on April 14 will be inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame this August.

The Cardinals have launched a new museum membership level for fans desiring the most premier level of benefits. Benefits of the Ultimate Cardinals Museum Membership include a bronze mini plaque engraved with the member’s name, an autographed bat and baseball from a Cardinals Hall of Famer, VIP seating for two at the Cardinals Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and much more.

This year’s new museum special exhibit entitled “Women in Baseball: How They Made History” examines women’s involvement and contributions to St. Louis baseball and the game at large.  The exhibit features over 100 artifacts with important pieces and images on loan from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Missouri Historical Society.  The exhibit tells stories about Major League Baseball’s first female owner, the origins of the iconic birds on the bat logo, local women from the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and more. Cardinals Insider with Ozzie Smith (#CardsInsider)

Cardinals Insider, the club’s weekly half-hour new magazine television show, made its season debut last Sunday with new host Ozzie Smith.  Now in its second season, Cardinals Insider with Ozzie Smith is available within 17 television markets in eight states.  Over the offseason, a new digital newsroom was constructed within the Cardinals press box to house the team’s multimedia video unit.  Five full-time journalists were hired to provide fans with behind the scenes access and daily content for the team’s various digital and social platforms including cardinals.com, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.

The show features a mix of news, player profiles, exclusive interviews, in-depth features, and a look back in team history with exclusive content from the team’s large archive and extensive museum collection.  In addition to offering fans an unprecedented view behind the scenes with the team, the show also places a strong emphasis on fan engagement and leveraging the team’s social media to enrich the viewer experience.  More information about the show, including previous episodes and a full list of affiliates, can be found at cardinals.com/insider.

2017 Fan Engagement Video Initiatives (#CardsFanFlix) 

#CardsFanFlix is the St. Louis Cardinals ongoing fan engagement initiative developed to encourage fans to create videos that celebrate the team.  Throughout the season, the Cardinals sponsor a variety of promotions, contests and campaigns under the umbrella of #CardsFanFlix asking fans to creatively use video to demonstrate their enthusiasm and support of the team while also having some fun:

The Third Annual Ultimate Fan Video Contest challenged fans to show their enthusiasm for the 2017 season while proving that they are the ultimate fan worthy of the ultimate opening day experience—four tickets in the President’s private box.  Fans entered their submissions at cardinals.com/ultimatefan.  The Cardinals are proud to announce that Gene Gaddis from Macomb, Ill. has won this year’s Ultimate Fan Contest.  Gene’s winning video can be viewed at atmlb.com/2ojPhoO.

In November, the Cardinals launched the Second Annual High School Video Challenge initiative offering high school students in the St. Louis metropolitan area an opportunity to compete for the chance to create a video featuring both Fredbird and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith at the students’ school.  Students were asked to develop an original video that promotes the St. Louis Cardinals and the students’ high school while including a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design and Math (STEAM) curriculum connection.  Five finalists were selected by Cardinals front office staff and employees of EducationPlus, which were then voted on by fans online atcardinals.com/studentvideochallenge.  The Cardinals are happy to announce that the students from Owensville High School have won the High School Video Challenge!  Their winning video entry can be seen at atmlb.com/2ok45nq.

The Second Annual Take Me Out To The Ballgame Talent Video Contest was launched in March, encouraging fans to submit videos of them singing their best rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”  The winning video, which will be selected by a fan vote, will be shown on the scoreboard at Busch Stadium before the Cardinals—Rockies game on July 26.  The winner will also be treated to a VIP experience that includes 12 tickets to the game.  Fans may submit their videos until May 21, followed by finalists being voted on by fans online from June 2-30 at cardinals.com/talent (winner to be announced July 3).

Cardinals Magazine Kicks Off 25th Anniversary Season 

Cardinals Magazine opens its quarter-century anniversary campaign with a must-read feature on fan favorite Matt Carpenter, who is taking on new roles and responsibilities for his team in 2017. This April cover story features the ultimate compliment of No. 13 from “Charlie Hustle,” the incomparable Pete Rose, who describes Carpenter as his “favorite player” and someone he admires the way he plays the game.  Speaking of those held in high regard, we sit down with Jose Oquendo, the man mentored by George Kissell and someone who will help develop the future of the franchise in his new role with the organization.

Page after page, fans will enjoy the breadth of stories in the season-opening edition. Official 2017 Cardinals Scorecard Celebrates 125th Anniversary of Franchise 

One of the longest-standing souvenirs in baseball, the scorecard represents much more than a means to keep track of the hits, runs and outs.  It’s a tangible keepsake commemorating a game that may be memorable for any number reasons—a fan’s first game, a couple’s first date or a record-setting performance.

It’s no wonder that the first order of business at Busch Stadium for baseball’s best fans is a stop at a Cardinals Publications vendor cart to purchase the Official 2017 Cardinals Scorecard.  Featuring the cover artwork of acclaimed St. Louis illustrator Mike Right—the scorecard designer since 2003—this season’s scorecard celebrates the franchise’s 125th anniversary logo paired with 12 Cardinals utilized by the club through the decades. Inside, you’ll find a tutorial on how to keep score the “Cardinal Way,” a method practiced by club officials since the 1940s.

2017 Official Team Media Guide 

The Cardinals official team Media Guide has long been relied upon by journalists and broadcasters who cover the team.  Containing stats, photos and biographies of every player in the Cardinals organization, along with the definitive history of the club since its inception, the 2017 Media Guide is the most comprehensive book about the Cardinals.  The 2017 Media Guide is available for $20 at the Official Cardinals Team Store, the Cardinals Authentics Shop or online at cardinals.com/mediaguide.

Home Opening Day is on Monday!

2016 Opening Day LogoToday is a travel day, and hopefully, the Cardinals will use the day off to review what went wrong in the last three games and recharge their batteries.  After a weekend series with the Braves, the Cards will finally be at home at Busch Stadium on Monday.  Will you be making the pilgrimage to downtown St. Louis to attend the pre-game festivities and/or go to the game?  Opening Day tickets are unfortunately not in my budget, but on Monday, I will occasionally sneak into the office across from my desk where I can look out the window and watch the activities on the video boards. For those of you coming downtown, there are details below on all of the Opening Day events. But even if you’re not coming to the game, read below about all of the new things that will be waiting for those who attend games at Busch this year.

LOUIS, Mo., April 7, 2016 – A pre-game ceremony that welcomes home the 2015 National League Central Division Champions, honors the team’s Hall of Famers, and commemorates the great tradition of Opening Day in St. Louis will punctuate a day of activities celebrating the annual return of baseball to St. Louis on Monday, April 11th.  The Cardinals will take on the Milwaukee Brewers in a 3:15 p.m. game.  Following is a schedule of official activities and information to help fans enjoy the great tradition that is Opening Day in St. Louis (#OpeningDaySTL).

 2016 Opening Day in St. Louis

There is no stronger evidence that St. Louis is one of the greatest sports cities in the United States than experiencing a Cardinals Opening Day.  As the day dawns, fans can feel the electric atmosphere.  They breathe it in.  They rejoice.  Baseball is back in the ‘Lou!

 The young and old celebrate this special day.  It doesn’t matter who they are, where they live or what their status is.  On this day, we are all the same.  We are one community united.   Opening Day is an unofficial holiday.  Together, we share a passion and an unyielding love for the Cardinals, for St. Louis and for baseball.  While it is the players who proudly wear the birds on the bat on their chests, it is safe to say that the pulse of the team beats very strongly within the hearts of everyone within Cardinals Nation.  This Opening Day is particularly special as the Cardinals celebrate the 10th anniversary in Busch Stadium and the 2006 World Championship squad.

Current players realize that playing in St. Louis is special as they stare out from the field and watch a sea of red-clad fans descend to cheer on the Redbirds at home or on the road.  Former players know it—as they continue to return to the Gateway City year after year, some donned in iconic red sport coats, to celebrate this town’s greatest tradition.  Our owners surely know it—as Chairman Bill DeWitt, Jr. and his ownership group celebrate their 20th anniversary of taking control of the organization and continue to invest in the metropolitan community.  And the fans definitely know it—as more than three million fans have visited Busch Stadium every year since 2004.

St. Louis doesn’t need to do anything more to prove that it is one of the greatest sports towns in the nation—that’s what 11 World Championships, 19 National League Pennants, 13 Division Titles, 25 first place finishes and over 9,700 wins will do for your city.  Regardless of past success, St. Louisans will continue to make the annual pilgrimage to Busch Stadium for Opening Day to demonstrate why they are the Best Fans in Baseball and why St. Louis truly is one of the best sports cities in all of America.

Pre-Game Schedule

 11:00 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.    Opening Day Pep Rally at Ballpark Village:  Join former Cardinals players, FOX Sports announcers and DJ Todd Thomas at the Ballpark Village parking lot, next to the Busch II Infield, for the Cardinals Opening Day Pep Rally.  This event is free for all fans to attend and will proceed rain or shine.  Fredbird and Team Fredbird will also be on hand to give away Opening Day tickets and other Cardinals & Ballpark Village prizes.  Food and drinks will be available for purchase as well. 

12:45 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.    Opening Day Pre-Game Party at Cardinals Nation:  New this year, Cardinals Nation will host the Official Pre-Game Party of the St. Louis Cardinals.  This ticketed pep-rally style party will be located on the second floor of Cardinals Nation in the Hall of Fame Club, two and a half hours prior to every Cardinals home game during the 2016 season.  The exclusive pre-game event includes a full buffet menu, all-inclusive bar and a DJ or live music all the way until first pitch.  Only 250 tickets will be allotted for each game, which fans can purchase at cardinals.com/pregame for digital delivery.  Tickets can also be purchased at any box office or at the Cardinals Museum in Cardinals Nation.  Opening Day tickets are currently sold out, but fans should continue to check cardinals.com/pregame.

 12:45 p.m. Gates open

 Budweiser Magnet Schedule Day:  All ticketed-fans, ages 21 and older, will receive a magnet featuring the 2016 Cardinals schedule, compliments of Budweiser.

 2:30 p.m.  Pre-game ceremonies begin with an appearance by the famed Budweiser Clydesdales.

Introduction of St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger, St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay and Missouri Governor Jay Nixon.

Introduction of Fredbird and Team Fredbird.

Hall of Famers will be introduced via a Ford Motorcade around the warning track.  Each Hall of Famer will be riding in a 2016 Ford Mustang convertibles

Watching on TV

Fans can watch the game and pre-game ceremony in High Definition on FOX Sports Midwest beginning at noon.  The game will also be broadcast nationally on MLB Network.

Radio Coverage

Fans can tune into KMOX (1120 AM) or one of the 141 stations in the Cardinals Radio Network to hear Mike Shannon and John Rooney call the game.  The expanded pre-game show starts at 1:40 p.m.

 Online or On The Go

Fans may also follow the game for free on cardinals.com using the Gameday application or via the team’s Twitter account, @Cardinals.  From mobile devices, fans can keep tabs on the score using MLB’s mobile app, At Bat 16.

New for 2016, fans who are customers of a participating pay-TV provider will be able to stream FOX Sports Midwest’s Cardinals telecasts on the FOX Sports GO app.  To stream games, users will need to verify their credentials by signing in with their pay-TV provider’s User ID and Password.  There is no additional charge to use FOX Sports GO.  Visit FOXSportsGo.com for more information.

Getting To The Game

MoDOT will have several lane closures on I-44 inside the city limits on Opening Day.  The department will have one lane closed in each direction on I-44 between Jamieson and Kingshighway.  In addition, the department will have one lane closed on the ramp from eastbound I-44 to northbound I-55.  Outside of the city, one lane will be closed around the clock on northbound and southbound I-55 at Reavis Barracks Road.  Fans heading to Opening Day activities should consider using I-70 or I-64 to get downtown, or allow themselves extra time to get through the work zones on I-44.  As usual, Clark Street will be closed in between the stadium and Ballpark Village.

Alternative Transportation

MetroLink is a convenient alternative to driving.  To avoid the traffic congestion and the cost of parking on game days, fans can use one of 21 free Park-Ride lots along the MetroLink line and take the train to Stadium Station, right across the street from the ballpark.  The Stadium Station has been updated since the off season and the Spruce Street Bridge has been replaced.  New stairs have been added to the south side of the station and the overpass will be open to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic with the exception of the south sidewalk, where construction will continue into the summer.  Check the Metro website MetroStLouis.org for schedules and the Park-Ride lot nearest you.

There are also plenty of buses in Missouri and Illinois that will get fans to Busch Stadium including the RedBird Express that departs from the Water Tower at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights, Illinois.  The first RedBird Express leaves 2½ hours before the game and runs approximately every 3-5 minutes.  On Opening Day, the RedBird Express will start running at noon.  MetroBus is another great option for getting to downtown St. Louis on Monday.  Fans can catch the #40 Broadway or #99 Downtown Trolley, which both have stops near Busch Stadium.

#CapsOn for Opening Day

The St. Louis Cardinals & MLB are celebrating the unofficial holiday of Opening Day by encouraging all baseball fans to wear caps on Opening Day whether they are attending a game, going to school, working in the office or watching from home.  The Cardinals are asking all fans to show their support for the Redbirds on April 11th by wearing your cap no matter where you are and posting a photo to social media with the hashtag #CapsOn.

Ballpark Improvements for 2016

Fans will immediately notice two major improvements to Busch Stadium as the team celebrates its 10th Anniversary at the ballpark: HD video boards and expanded backstop netting.  Additional upgrades, such as WiFi connectivity will be coming to Busch Stadium later this season to improve the fan experience.

All 11 stadium-facing LED scoreboards were replaced as part of the team’s multi-million dollar investment in the new state-of-the art high definition video boards; a series of improvements three years in the making.  The main video scoreboard is now one complete full-color LED screen replacing the previous LED screen, tri-visions, and 2-color matrix boards and line score.  The new video board occupies the entire 120’ x 40’ space that all the other equipment occupied, and is approximately three times larger than the previous video board with twice the resolution and brightness thanks to the more compact placement of the LEDs.  The new World Championship Board (Out of Town Board) replaces some backlit signage and a tri-vision board for an entire full-color LED area of 81’ x 40’ with 13 mm spacing; approximately two and a half times larger than the previous video board.  In addition to the two main scoreboards, all other stadium-facing Fascia Ribbon Board Displays including first base, third base, centerfield, bullpens, and speed pitch were replaced adding more than twice the resolution of the previous boards.

The new scoreboards and new scoreboard equipment will make every display High Definition.  The new equipment will also enhance the club’s capability to show more replays from more angles, add more roaming or wireless HD cameras in the fan entertainment experience, more options and abilities to create new layouts with more stats and entertainment elements as well as more dynamic signage abilities for sponsors.  The upgrade also includes some re-working of the stadium audio system with new amplifiers and control software to provide fans an enhanced audio experience.  The team upgraded all of the control and production equipment to take advantage of the new system as well.

The effort to equip Busch Stadium with WiFi throughout the stadium later this season is part of Major League Baseball Advanced Media’s (MLBAM) $300 million, multi-year plan to bring WiFi and improved cellular connectivity to every major league ballpark.  Busch Stadium is the largest installation of all the MLBAM WiFi projects to date.  Over 740 WiFi access points are being installed to accommodate fans in all locations of the stadium, including in the AT&T Rooftop, Budweiser Brewhouse rooftop deck and Busch II Infield at Ballpark Village.  As part of the WiFi installation, the equivalent of 30 miles of Cat6a Ethernet cabling, 11 miles of 6-strand optic cabling and two miles of conduit were laid.  The installation project will take more than 10,000 man hours to complete.  Barring any setbacks, in-stadium WiFi should be available for fans to access beginning in May.  Additional stadium improvements include:

The backstop safety netting behind home plate to each team’s dugout step. The netting is 30 feet tall and exceeds the minimum guidelines established by MLB.

8th Street Market, a new grab-and go concept, has been added behind home plate in the location Build-A-Bear Workshop previously occupied.  The self-serve, pay at the register store will give fans the option to purchase a variety of soda, beer, water, dry snacks, novelty ice cream, and premade sandwiches and salads in a quick and efficient manner without having to wait in concession lines.

The Build-A-Bear Workshop has relocated its store within Busch Stadium to inside the centerfield Ford Plaza.  The new 600 square-foot store is actually a converted shipping container that features the company’s signature stuffer and refreshed branding.  Fans will be able to choose from an exciting variety of licensed accessories and make their own furry friends, including a St. Louis Cardinals Bear, a St. Louis Cardinals Bunny, Fredbird and a Clydesdale horse.

Some of the premium ticketed areas have seen improvements as well including: installation of new Green Seats behind home plate, renovation of five Luxury Suites, and the installation of televisions that show the scoreboard display in the Champions Club and Legends Club.

New HD televisions have been installed in various locations throughout the stadium.  This completes an effort to upgrade over 600 televisions in the stadium over that past three years.

New Concessions for 2016

Delaware North Companies Sportservice, the St. Louis Cardinals’ concessionaire for more than 50 years, is preparing to welcome fans back to Busch with a starting lineup of food to please every fan’s unique taste.  Delaware North Executive Chef Larry Johnson and his culinary team have developed a wide array of new menu items for both concessions and suites.  Following is a list of the new concession menu items:

  • Meatball Cone – Custom made on “The Hill” for Busch Stadium, meatball and marinara sauce served in a six-inch Italian bread cone and topped with mozzarella and parmesan cheeses.  (Section 152)
  • Meatball Hoagie – Custom made on “The Hill” for Busch Stadium, meatballs served on a bakery fresh Italian hoagie topped with marinara and shredded mozzarella.  (Section 152)
  • Italian Sausage Hoagie – Custom made on “The Hill” for Busch Stadium, seven-inch Italian sausage served on a bakery fresh Italian hoagie topped with peppers, onions and shredded mozzarella.  (Section 152)
  • Smoked Brisket Italian Beef Hoagie – House slow smoked beef brisket, shaved and marinated in au jus; served on a bakery fresh Italian Hoagie and topped with giardiniera vegetables.  (Section 152)
  • Chicharrón – House fried pork rinds topped with either taco beef or BBQ pulled pork, nacho cheese, and your choice of ingredients including: salsa, jalapenos, banana peppers, diced onions, green onions and sour cream.  (Sections  131, 152, 450 & Redbird Club)
  • House Smoked Meats – Turkey, Brisket, Sausage, and Pork served on a bakery fresh bun with house fried chips for Basket or with coleslaw and potato salad for a Platter.  Half rack house smoked Saint Louis Style ribs available on Platter only.  (Broadway BBQ Stand – Section 109)
  • Dinger’s Donuts – Fresh fried mini donuts, served warm in a Dinger Dozen (14 each) or Cardinal’s Helmet (50 each), topped with your choice of toppings including: chocolate, maple, or vanilla glaze, chopped nuts, sprinkles, or cinnamon sugar.  (Section 145)
  • Berry Brownie Skewer – Fresh strawberries and fudgy brownies layered on a twelve-inch skewer and drizzled with white and milk chocolate.  (Section 145)
  • Turkey Burger – Charbroiled turkey patty on split top bun with arugula and pico de gallo; served with house fried tortilla chips.  (Section 135 & 458)
  • Vegan Burger – Malibu vegan patty on split top bun with arugula and sliced tomato; served with house fried tortilla chips.  (Section 135 & 458)
  • Gluten Free Chicken Tenders – Four gluten free chicken tenders served a la cart or as a basket with tater tots.  (Section 135 & 458)

New Suite Menu Items

In suites, Delaware North is adding some unique options that will provide even greater variety for fans.  Meatloaf Cupcakes (meatloaf wrapped in bacon and topped with mashed potatoes, green beans and bacon-onion jam) along with Turkey Sliders served on pretzel buns highlight the new menu offerings.  Local inspired choices such as Cherokee Street Tamales (traditional pork tamales, steamed in corn husk and served with enchilada sauce and sour cream) and house-smoked St. Louis Style Ribs are also newly available this year.  Additional new entrée selections include Chicken Spiendini Alfredo and Legends Baked Italian Chicken.  Other new suite menu items include a Spinach Cobb Salad, a Strawberry Pecan Salad, Sausage Florentine Pizza, a Vegetable Wrap, and a Skillet Cookie and Seasonal Crisp for dessert.

New Retail for 2016

New Cardinals-branded apparel and merchandise for 2016 is available at the Cardinals Team Store and other locations within the ballpark.  New items include Authentic Jerseys by Majestic with new Flex Base Fabric and Batting Practice Hats by New Era.  New men’s and women’s apparel lines from SustainU (100% recycled apparel, made in the USA) and Hands High (created by Jimmy Fallon) are also new arrivals this season.

Other new retail items include “One Nation” apparel (combination design of Cardinals and Blue logos), brown leather Dooney & Bourke handbags, expanded Columbia outwear selection and more co-branded merchandise headlined by Marvel, Star Wars and local collegiate teams.

Cardinals Authentics Shop

Fans can visit one of the two Cardinals Authentics locations (first floor of Cardinals Nation inside Ballpark Village and Busch Stadium in Ford Plaza north of Gate 6)  to shop for authentic Cardinals gear and to take home a piece of the game.  Cardinals Authentics specialize in official, game-used, limited edition and autographed memorabilia direct from the club.  Both shops offer a great selection of current and vintage Cardinals apparel, as well as one-of-a-kind collectibles.  The Cardinals Nation location is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (April-October) and 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (November-March) on game nights, the Busch Stadium shop will remain open 30 minutes after last pitch while the Cardinals Nation shop will remain open for one hour after last pitch.

Fans should stop by the Authentics Store to pick up autographed items from a variety of Cardinals players, including Adam Wainwright, Matt Carpenter, Seung Hwan Oh, Tommy Pham and Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Alex Reyes.  Cardinals Authentics also features a wide selection of Yadier Molina autographed and game used memorabilia.  Cardinals Authentics will continue to offer game-used memorabilia such as baseballs and bases available for purchase before the end of the game throughout the 2016 season as well.

The Cardinals Hall of Fame & Museum at Cardinals Nation

In January, Chris Carpenter, Keith Hernandez, Jason Isringhausen, Mark McGwire, Matt Morris, Edgar Renteria, Scott Rolen and Joe Torre were revealed as the eight players nominated for possible induction into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.  The eight modern ballot nominees selected by a “Red Ribbon” committee of Cardinals baseball experts through a secret ballot process appear on the Cardinals Hall of Fame ballot online at cardinals.com/HOF presented by Edward Jones (#CardsHOF).  The two players with the most fan votes after voting concludes on April 20th will be inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame this August.

Saturday Signings at the Museum is a new program held exclusively in the Cardinals Museum before each Saturday home game during the 2016 season where fans can get an autograph from a former Cardinals player with valid admission to the Museum.  The player will sign for two hours prior to game time.  In addition to having a valid admission to the museum, fans must have an autograph line ticket, which are free and will be distributed on the day of each Saturday signing.  The first Saturday Signing will be held on April 16th when franchise saves leader Jason Isringhausen signs from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Fans can visit cardinals.com/museum for the full schedule and additional detail.

Club Launches Cardinals Insider TV Show

On March 6th, the Cardinals premiered Cardinals Insider, a weekly half-hour news magazine television show and companion online news site on cardinals.com that will provide fans with the ultimate behind-the-scenes view of the entire St. Louis organization.  The half-hour TV show features a mix of news, player profiles, exclusive interviews, in-depth features, and a look back in team history with exclusive content from the team’s large archive and extensive museum collection.  In addition to offering fans an unprecedented view behind the scenes of the team, the show also places a strong emphasis on fan engagement and leveraging the team’s social media to enrich the viewer experience.  The Cardinals production of a television show, as well as the team’s commitment to consistently producing streaming video content throughout the year, is a major milestone in the expansion of the team’s brand journalism which began more than two decades ago with the publication of Cardinals Magazine.

2016 Video Engagement Initiative For Fans (#CardsFanFlix)

#CardsFanFlix is the St. Louis Cardinals’ ongoing fan engagement initiative developed to encourage fans to create videos that celebrate the team.  Throughout the season, the Cardinals will be sponsoring a variety of promotions, contests and campaigns under the umbrella of #CardsFanFlix to encourage fans to creatively use video to demonstrate their enthusiasm and support of the team while also having some fun!

The team recently launched #PlayBallLikeACardinal, a youth-focused video engagement seeking out young people who have a passion for the Redbirds and are incorporating that passion into how they play the game.  Fans are asked to post short video clips of their children imitating their favorite Cardinals players to their preferred social media platform (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) using the hashtag, #PlayBallLikeACardinal, or share a link to a video they have posted to a public video platform like YouTube directly with the Cardinals at cardinals.com/playball.  The Cardinals intend to share videos of children playing ball like Cardinals on the team’s television broadcasts such as Cardinals Insider, within Busch Stadium on the new high definition scoreboard or online via cardinals.com, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

For the second year in a row, Reverend Robbie Sondag, a Cardinals fan from Fort Wayne, Indiana, will enjoy the Ultimate Opening Day experience with tickets to the President’s Box as he won the Cardinals Second Annual Ultimate Fan Video Contest with his Everything Is Great Ultimate Cardinal Fan Video.

In December, the Cardinals launched a High School Video Challenge initiative offering high school students in the St. Louis Metropolitan area an opportunity to compete for the chance to create a video with the team at the students’ school featuring both Fredbird and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith.  Students were asked to develop an original video that promotes the St. Louis Cardinals and the students’ high school while including a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design and Math (STEAM) curriculum connection.  Eight finalists were announced and fans voted online for their favorite student produced rough cut video to determine the winner.  The winner will be announced on Opening Day.

To recognize fans for extraordinary achievement in the developing art-form of online video, mobile based entertainment and social media posts that celebrate and promote the St. Louis Cardinals, the club announced the creation of the ‘For Really Entertaining Digital Award’, nicknamed the FRED award.  The team plans to bestow the award each week on the team’s weekly news magazine television show Cardinals Insider, online on the team’s website at cardinals.com/FREDaward and through the team’s various social media platforms.  Winners will be awarded the pictured statuette.

Cardinals Magazine Kicks Off 25th Season With Fantastic Season-Opening Edition

2016 Official Scorecard Celebrates 10th Anniversary Of Busch Stadium III

One of the longest-standing collectible souvenirs in baseball, the scorecard represents much more than a means to keep track of the hits, runs and outs that occur over the course of a game.  It’s a tangible keepsake commemorating a game that might be memorable for any number reasons—a fan’s first game, a couple’s first date or a record-setting performance.

2016 Economic Impact Analysis

Based on a projected Cardinals regular season attendance of 3.4 million fans, the St. Louis Regional Chamber projects that the team will generate an estimated $184.1 million in direct impact and another $160.1 million in indirect spending.  These impacts reach a total of $344.2 million in regional economic activity.  The Chamber’s analysis uses the economic impact model, IMPLAN, which measures how spending tied to an event has multiple impacts and spreads throughout a region, thereby benefiting households and firms within the region.  This figure is based on estimates of visitor spending and operations expenditures at Busch Stadium.  Historically, out-of-town visitors constitute about 40% of game attendees and visitor spending on dining, lodging and shopping provides a significant boost to the regional economy.

BUSCH STADIUM – POLICY REMINDERS

Bag Inspections Policy

  • The standard game-day bag inspection policies for Busch Stadium will be in effect.  Bags must meet Major League Baseball’s standard size restriction (16” x 16” x 8”), and all bags will be inspected prior to entry. 
  • Fans will be permitted to bring small personal cameras and will be subject to inspection.  No professional-sized photography equipment will be allowed except for members of the media with proper MLB credentials.

·         Fans can bring their own food & drinks into Busch Stadium for all 81 games.  Food & beverages from the outside will not be permitted in the Cardinals Club, Luxury Suites, Party Suites or any of our other All-Inclusive areas.

  • Non-alcoholic beverages such as water and soda in open cups or in clear plastic bottles no larger than two (2) liters are allowed.
  • Alcohol, bottles, cans, thermoses, hard-sided coolers; hard plastic cups/mugs are not permitted.
  • Small banners and signs are allowed.  Banners may be displayed as long as they do not hinder or interfere with a ball in play or distract or interfere with the view of another guest.  Banners may not be displayed in fair territory, be obscene or in poor taste, attract abuse or cause a disturbance among other guests.  They should be baseball-oriented and not commercial in nature.
  • Please minimize items you bring into the stadium to speed up the inspection process. 
  • Expect long lines upon entry and allow yourself plenty of time to go through the inspection process. 

Exit/Re-entry Policy

Standard Exit/Re-entry Policies are in effect.  Guests wishing to leave the stadium, but planning to return during the same game must present their ticket, obtain a re-entry card, and have their hand stamped at Gate 4 as they exit the stadium.  Guests must show their ticket, re-entry card and hand stamp as they pass through the metal detectors upon re-entry.

No Smoking Policy

Standard Busch Stadium Smoking Policy is in effect.  Busch Stadium is a smoke-free facility, including “smokeless” cigarettes.  Exit/Re-entry turnstiles will be set up at Gate 4 to allow fans access in and out of the stadium if they wish to smoke.  Guests must show their ticket, re-entry card and hand stamp as they pass through the metal detectors upon re-entry.

  • Remembering Taveras: Prior to the game, there will be a tribute video and moment of silence for Oscar Taveras and long-time sportswriter Bryan Burwell.  
  • Pre-game Ceremony: The pre-game ceremony begins at 2:30 p.m. as the famed Budweiser Clydesdales take their annual pre-game lap around the warning track. The ceremony continues with appearances from St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger, St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay, Fredbird, Team Fredbird and an American Bald Eagle, courtesy of the World Bird Sanctuary. The 2015 team and National Baseball Hall of Famers will be introduced via Ford motorcade, while 2014 Cardinals Hall of Fame class members Mike Shannon, Jim Edmonds and Willie McGee will also be on field. The Color Guard and American Flag in center field will be presented by the service men and women of Ft. Leonard Wood.

  • Rawlings Gold Glove Ceremony: In a ceremony prior to the game, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and right fielder Jason Heyward will receive their 2014 Rawlings Gold Glove awards. Gold Gloves are awarded annually for fielding excellence. This marks Molina’s seventh consecutive award (2008-2014) and Heyward’s second (2012, 2014 with the Braves). Molina will also receive his 2014 Platinum Glove Award. Since the award’s inception in 2011, Molina has won it three times as the best defender at any position in the National League.

Metal Detectors

One change Cardinals fans will note this season is the installation of walk-through metal detectors at all Busch Stadium gates and entrances, as part of Major League Baseball’s implementation of mandatory metal detection screening of all guests at all MLB ballparks in 2015. Please see below for some helpful tips to ensure a smooth entry process for fans at Busch Stadium this season:

Allow more time – Stadium entry may take longer than in previous years. Please try to arrive earlier than normal to ensure you’re in the ballpark in plenty of time.

  • Be prepared for gate inspections – Entering with fewer items and having bags ready for inspection will speed up the process. Busch Stadium walk-through metal detectors are not as sensitive as TSA detectors at airports. Fans do not need to remove belt and shoes, but will need to remove large metal objects from pockets such as cell phones, keys, and glasses. Please inform gate staff of pacemakers or artificial joints that may set off the detectors. Have game tickets ready for ushers to scan. Fans can also visit this linkfor a refresher on which items are allowed into the ballpark.
  • Best gates to use – Fans who park on North or East sides of Busch Stadium are encouraged to enter at Gates 1 or 6, as these gates typically have shorter entry lines.

Cardinals Care (#CardsCare) was established to give fans a way of teaming up with Cardinals players and the organization to help children in our community – both on and off the baseball field. Opening Day 2015Only 3 more days until the Cardinals’ home opener!  Since I work 2 blocks from Busch Stadium, I’ve been watching as the structural steel has been repainted and watching as the stadium is being spruced up for the new season.  I can’t wait to see it on TV during the Opening Day ceremonies.  And of course, it will be great to see our boys back home. If you’re going to be at any of the rallies, comment below so I can look for you!  Here’s all the details on Monday’s activities and all the new items at the stadium:

Tradition Meets Today for Fans at Opening Day 2015

ST. LOUIS – April 9, 2015– A pre-game ceremony that welcomes home the 2014 National League Central Division Champions, honors the team’s Hall of Famers, and commemorates the great tradition of Opening Day in St. Louis will punctuate a day of activities celebrating the annual return of baseball to St. Louis on Monday, April 13th.  The Cardinals will take on the Milwaukee Brewers in a 3:15 p.m. game. Following is a schedule of official activities and information to help fans enjoy the great tradition that is Opening Day in St. Louis (#OpeningDaySTL).

Opening Day in St. Louis 2015 – Tradition Meets Today

Tradition Meets Today – It is the theme of the 2015 season and the focus of the home opener this year. No one day better embodies the rich tradition of the St. Louis Cardinals than Opening Day at Busch Stadium. Despite the fact that the Cardinals are celebrating their 124th season of play in the National League, there is always something fresh and new about the home opener.

In a city where baseball is a religion and the fan passion is extraordinary, the story of Opening Day is told more effectively through poetry than prose. Opening Day in St. Louis is a day where generations of fans from all walks of life and different corners of the community come together in fellowship to celebrate their deep connection with the team and with one another.

The tradition is passed on from year to year, from teammate to teammate, and from fan to fan. The tradition is also refreshed and renewed each spring. For many fans, Opening Day in St. Louis is a long-standing tradition they celebrate annually. For others, a new tradition will be born on Monday in St. Louis.

Regardless of how a fan shares the Opening Day experience, what gate they enter, seat or standing room spot they occupy, or how they choose to share the experience (in park, at Ballpark Village, online, on social media, with the At Bat 15 app, on TV, via radio etc.), all Cardinals fans are part of the important tradition that embodies the hope, joy and shared purpose that a new season of baseball brings. It doesn’t matter if you are a child attending your first game or a Hall of Famer celebrating 70 seasons in baseball, Opening Day is sure to give you goosebumps. This Monday, Opening Day in St. Louis is where Tradition Meets Today.

Schedule

11 a.m. – 2 p.m.   Cardinals Official Opening Day Pre-Game Pep Rally, sponsored by Hardee’s:  The Cardinals, Ballpark Village and Hardee’s will host a pre-game pep rally in the Ballpark Village parking lot. Fan favorite, DJ Todd Thomas will perform from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fredbird and Team Fredbird will be on hand to give away Opening Day tickets, autographed items and other Cardinals prizes. Fans can purchase a Hardee’s Combo Meal after regular breakfast hours from the Mobile Diner or Hardee’s restaurant on Chestnut and receive a free Cardinals t-shirt while supplies last. Other sponsors include: Budweiser, FOX Sports Midwest, Goodwill, The Muny, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Office Essentials and The Tan Company. Radio Coverage

Fans can tune into KMOX (1120 AM) or one of the 140 Stations in the Cardinals Radio Network to hear Mike Shannon and John Rooney call the game. The expanded pre-game show starts at 1:40 p.m.

Fans may also follow the game for free on cardinals.com using the Gameday application, or via the team’s Twitter account, @Cardinals. From mobile devices, fans can keep tabs on the score using MLB’s mobile app, At Bat 15.

Getting to the Game

MoDOT will not have any scheduled lane closures on state highways inside the city limits for Opening Day. There have been several changes to roadways around the downtown area – most importantly on Memorial. Drivers should pay attention to the roadways, as roads they are familiar with may have changed. Since the ramp from the Poplar Street Bridge to eastbound I-44 (formerly westbound I-70) is closed for reconstruction, Illinois drivers should use the ramp to 9th Street.

From northbound I-55, drivers can continue on eastbound I-44 to Walnut or to Washington. From eastbound I-70, drivers can take the Tucker ramp into the city, or stay on westbound I-44 and exit at Broadway. Illinois drivers can now also use the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge to get into downtown. When they get off the bridge, they can follow Tucker into the downtown area. As usual, Clark Street will be closed in between the stadium and Ballpark Village.

Alternative Transportation

MetroLink is a convenient alternative to driving. To avoid the traffic congestion and the cost of parking on game day, fans can use one of 19 free Park-Ride lots along the MetroLink line and take the train to Stadium Station, right across the street from the ballpark. Check the Metro website,MetroSt.Louis.org, for schedules and the Park-Ride lot nearest you. There are also plenty of buses in Missouri and Illinois that will get fans to Busch Stadium including the RedBird Express that departs from the Water Tower at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights, Illinois. The first RedBird Express leaves 2 ½ hours before the game and runs approximately every 5 minutes. On Opening Day, the RedBird Express will start running at noon.

Ballpark Improvements

As the Cardinals begin their tenth season of play in Busch Stadium, the team has made a number of improvements to the stadium during the offseason, including a major expansion of the UMB Champions Club, as well as a variety of other upgrades and maintenance projects throughout the ballpark.

The UMB Champions Club, one of the most sought after, all-inclusive, luxury VIP fan experiences within the ballpark has undergone a 1,000 square foot expansion, including the installation of 87 new seats. The club was expanded to the south over the Musial Bridge as well as to the north toward the Budweiser Bow Tie Bar.

The Gate 5 area of the ballpark was reconfigured to improve the pedestrian flow within the ballpark and fan access to the park. The gates were moved 12 feet north toward Clark Street. These improvements have also improved the site lines from the AT&T Rooftop and other spots within Cardinals Nation in Ballpark Village.

A new retail store has been added in center field featuring hats from New Era, 47 Brand and American Needle, and an embroidery machine to create custom hats. The store is located in Ford Plaza at the entrance to the Family Pavilion.

One of the biggest changes fans will note this season is the installation of walk-through metal detectors at all of the gates and stadium entrances as part of Major League Baseball’s implementation of mandatory metal detection screening of all guests at all MLB ballparks in 2015.

For more than a decade, the Cardinals have conducted systematic screening of fans with handheld metal detectors. In order to ensure effective screening of all guests who enter the park with minimal inconvenience or delay, the Cardinals have installed walk-through magnetometers at all gates and increased event staffing by twenty percent.   Additional upgrades and improvements include:

  •  Extensive painting of all of the exposed structural steel around the ballpark
  •  A variety of concession stands throughout the ballpark have been upgraded. All concession stands have been upgraded with new energy-efficient beverage coolers to dispense refreshing Coke and AB-In Bev beverages. New, easier-to-read, graphically-enhanced menu boards have been installed at all of the field level concession stands.
  •  New televisions have been installed in various sections of the ballpark.
  •  The installation of new backstop netting behind home plate
  •  The installation of a new Trivision scoreboard in center field
  •  Renovation of the Group Sales Corner including walls and an enhanced AV system
  •  More directional signage has been installed to assist fans navigating the ballpark.
  •  The re-numbering of all bleacher seat sections from 500 sections to 100 sections to better reflect that the bleachers  are located on the first level of the ballpark (101,103,105,107, 109, 111, 189, 191, 193, 195, 197).
  •  The installation of LED light fixtures in a variety of locations within the ballpark to improve illumination while also  enhancing energy efficiency
  •  The installation of new flooring throughout select areas of the ballpark.

In addition to the ballpark improvements, some operational changes will be in place during 2015 season. The most notable change is that gates will open 1 ½ hours prior to games on Monday thru Thursday (with the exception of Opening Day & holidays), and two hours prior to Friday, Saturday and Sunday games. Food and beverage service in all-inclusive areas will commence when the ballpark opens. Gate 4 will permanently become the only smoking/ re-entry gate.

New Menu for 2015

Delaware North Companies Sportservice, the St. Louis Cardinals’ concessionaire for more than 50 years, is preparing to welcome fans back to the Stadium with a starting lineup of food to please every fan’s unique taste. New are several menu items in concessions and suites along with a second location of a 2014 fan favorite, The Barrel Aged Cocktail Bar, featuring craft cocktails. Delaware North Executive Chef Larry Johnson and his culinary team have developed a wide array of new menu items for both concessions and suites.  Following is a list of the new concession menu items:

  •  Waffle Sandwiches – Waffles cooked to order with choice of fried chicken breast with maple bacon gravy; chicken  carnitas with crispy bacon, pico de gallo and ranch dressing; or BBQ pulled pork with creamy coleslaw and BBQ  sauce. Each sandwich is served with white queso tater tots (“Crowd The Plate Stand”-section 148).
  •  Walking Tacos – Choice of original Doritos or Fritos topped with sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese and salsa.  Build on that with nacho beef, pulled pork or chicken carnitas. (Sections 266, 432, 199) Shrimp Walking Tacos are  available at the Island Grill location near Section 144. Nacho Beef Walking Tacos (only) will also be vended in the  seats.
  •  Extreme Bacon Sandwich – BBQ spiced ground pork filled with cheddar cheese and crisp chopped bacon, wrapped with apple-wood-smoked bacon and finished with barbeque glaze. The sandwich is carved to order, served on a locally baked Hawaiian bun with BBQ aioli and served with maple bacon chips (Broadway BBQ –Section 109 and Bacon Station Portable at Section 446).
  •  Turkey Burger – A ground turkey patty served on a locally-baked Hawaiian bun with arugula, guacamole and pico de  gallo. Comes with house-fried tortilla chips (Double Play Tap & Grill-Section 135).
  •  Double Gooey Burger – This half-pound burger consists of two fresh grilled patties served on a locally baked  Hawaiian bun with two slices of American cheese, signature sauce, shredded lettuce and sliced tomato (Double Play Tap & Grill-Section 135).
  •  Quadruple Gooey Burger – This one-pound burger consists of four fresh grilled patties served on a locally baked  Hawaiian bun with four slices of American cheese, signature sauce, shredded lettuce and sliced tomato (Double Play  Tap & Grill – Section 135).
  •  Big Kahuna – An 8-oz. jumbo ice cream sandwich cookie (Available at all Ballpark Favorites concession stands and  vended throughout the stadium).
  •  Oreo Churro – A 7-inch double-twist Oreo batter churro with Oreo crème dipping sauce (Redbird Club – Section 251  and Oreo/Funnel Cake Portables at Sections 454 and 145).
  •  7-oz. Bavarian Pretzel – An oversize Bavarian-style pretzel large enough to share with family or friends (Gashouse Grills, Sections 141, 101, 271, 264, 266, 432).
  •  Bacon Cheddar Bratwurst – Locally produced by Norrenberns Foods for Busch stadium with chopped bacon,  cheddar cheese and topped with BBQ sauce (Broadway BBQ – Section 109 and The Bacon Station Portable –  Section 446).
  •  Pretzel Bites – Locally made by A Different Twist, these pretzel poppers are served with white queso dipping sauce  (Crowd the Plate – Section 148 & Triple Play in Section 271).
  •  Deep-Fried Oreo Cookies – Oreo cookies fried in funnel cake batter and served with a side of whipped cream and  chocolate sauce (Redbird Club Section 251 and Crowd the Plate Stand at Section 148).

Due to customer demand, Cardinals fans will also have another new spot at which to quench their thirst. The second location of The Barrel Aged Cocktail Bar (Section 130) features a wide array of craft cocktails made fresh from a variety of ingredients, including fine spirits, fresh fruits and juices. Among the new craft cocktails: The Dark and Stormy, made with dark rum and ginger beer; the Crisp Caramel Apple, made with Crown Royal Regal Apple and Sprite; the Specialty Bloody Mary with Absolut Cilantro Vodka; the B.L.T., made with Bulleit Bourbon, a lemon garish and tonic water; and three cocktails made with White Lightnin’, including Redbird Punch made with White Lightin’ and Apple Pie Moonshine mixed with cranberry juice and ginger ale.

New Suite Menu Items

In suites, Delaware North is adding a Sushi Cart, a Turkey and Beef Tenderloin Carvery Cart, and Hand-Dipped Ice Cream Cart, which will feature vanilla and chocolate ice cream, root beer and orange floats and various toppings. Among the new suite menu packages are the Cardinals Sampler, which includes house-made meatballs, toasted cannelloni and Buffalo chicken wings; the Ultimate Burger Slider Trio, featuring black Angus beef, turkey or Italian sausage served with various cheeses and toppings on a bakery fresh Kaiser bun; and a Jumbo Hot Dog Bar with all-beef franks and a variety of toppings ranging from pulled pork to corn pico de gallo.

Other new suite menu items include a Watermelon and Spinach Salad, a Kale and Arugula Salad, a Spinach Artichoke Pizza, a Mediterranean Focaccia Sandwich, St. Louis Chicken Po’ Boy Slider, and Strawberry Shortcake. Suite holders will also have access to the new Field Suites Landing, featuring Stella Artois draft beer, an assortment of craft beers, premium wines, and Cold Slab Creamery ice cream with a selection of “mix-in” toppings.

New Retail for 2015

Fans will also find new Cardinals apparel and other merchandise, plus a new specialty retail store. Delaware North created a new retail store in centerfield featuring hats from New Era, 47 Brand and American Needle, and an embroidery machine to create custom hats. Men’s, women’s and children’s apparel will also be available. The new store is located in Ford Plaza at Section 101, at the entrance to the Family Pavilion.

New Cardinals-branded apparel and merchandise for 2015, which is available at the Cardinals Team Store and other locations within the ballpark, include exclusive Delaware North-created hats; ladies apparel, plush, and accessories from Tokidoki; watches with interchangeable faces and bands from Modify; new replica jerseys with a Cool Base fabric; Alex Woo jewelry featuring a second logo; a new collection of eight different style Dooney and Bourke handbags; a ukulele, guitar straps and picks from Peavey; Eastland boat shoes and Row One sneakers; an expanded line of pet products; and an expanded Peanuts line, including men’s women’s and children’s apparel and bobbleheads.

Fans will want to visit one of the two Cardinals Authentics locations (inside Cardinals Nation and Busch Stadium in the Ford Plaza north of Gate 6)  to shop for genuine Cardinals gear and to own a piece of St. Louis history. Both Cardinals Authentics locations specialize in official, game-used, limited edition and  autographed collectibles and memorabilia direct from the club. Both stores offer a great selection of current and vintage Cardinals apparel, as well as one-of-a-kind collectibles. Cardinals Authentics is offering the ultimate fan experience by having game-used memorabilia such as baseballs and bases available for purchase before the end of the game throughout the 2015 season. The beautifully-framed piece, inscribed with “70 years in Baseball, 1945-2015,”retails for $249.99.

In January, Cardinals Authentics launched a coin series which will include one frame to display the 11 coins that will be available throughout the season. Each month, Cardinals Authentics will make a new coin available that commemorates one of the 11 World Series Titles from the St. Louis Cardinals. The coins retail for $11.99 and the frame retails for $24.99.

Fans should stop by the Authentics Store to pick up autographed items from a variety of Cardinals players, including Adam Wainwright, Matt Carpenter, Randal Grichuk, Marco Gonzales, Mike Matheny, Matt Adams, and Kolten Wong. Ballpark Village

Ballpark Village will again be the place to be before, during and after the game. Since opening in March of 2014, Ballpark Village has hosted more than 5 million visitors of all ages from across the country and brought hundreds of great events to downtown. As Ballpark Village enters its second year, several additions and improvements are underway including the recent opening of the new Crown Room second-floor lounge in Budweiser Brew House, the addition of two 15-foot television screens in Fox Sports Midwest Live!, a two-sided permanent outdoor stage next to the Busch II infield and greatly improved sight lines into left center field in Busch Stadium. Fans will want to come downtown early to have breakfast at Cardinals Nation Restaurant and Bar in Ballpark Village on Opening Day. Cardinals Nation will open for breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. hosting the Y98 Phillips and Company Morning Show featuring menu items chosen by the Y98 Crew.

Open daily, Cardinals Nation is the year-round home to Cardinals fans offering a variety of weekly programming and special events. Offering an expansive menu that recently doubled in size with 27 new menu items, Cardinals Nation has something for everyone. Known for putting a spin on traditional favorites, the Cardinals Nation menu boasts the right mixture of everyday picks and unique novelties. Fans will want to check out the G&W Grill on game days in front of Cardinals Nation on Clark Street. The G&W Grill features St. Louis’ own G&W Sausage Company Bratwursts and Hot Dogs.

Fans will also want to visit the new Cardinals Hall of Fame Club on the second floor of the Cardinals Nation Restaurant and Bar that will be open before and after every home baseball game. The Hall of Fame Club features a great Game Day Buffet prior to the game and an ala carte small plate menu after the game. #CardsFanFlix – 2015 Initiative to Engage with Fans Using Mobile Video

BUSCH STADIUM – POLICY REMINDERS

Bag Inspections Policy

  • The standard game-day bag inspection policies for Busch Stadium will be in effect. Bags must meet Major League Baseball’s standard size restriction (16”x16”x8”), and all bags will be inspected prior to entry.
  • Fans will be permitted to bring small personal cameras and will be subject to inspection.  No professional-sized photography equipment will be allowed except for members of the media with proper MLB credentials.
  • Non-alcoholic beverages such as water and soda in open cups or in clear plastic bottles no larger than 2 liters are allowed.
  • Alcohol, bottles, cans, thermoses, hard-sided coolers; hard plastic cups/mugs are not permitted.
  • Small banners and signs are allowed. Banners may be displayed as long as they do not hinder or interfere with a ball in play or distract or interfere with the view of another guest. Banners may not be displayed in fair territory, be obscene or in poor taste, attract abuse or cause a disturbance among other guests. They should be baseball-oriented and not commercial in nature.
  • Please minimize items you bring into the stadium to speed up the inspection process.
  • Expect long lines upon entry and allow yourself plenty of time to go through the inspection process.

Exit/Re-entry Policy

Standard Exit/Re-entry Policies are in effect. Guests wishing to leave the stadium, but planning to return during the same game must present their ticket, obtain a re-entry card, and have their hand stamped at Gate 4 as they exit the stadium. Guests must show their ticket, re-entry card and hand stamp as they pass through the metal detectors upon re-entry.

No Smoking Policy

Standard Busch Stadium Smoking Policy is in effect. Busch Stadium is a smoke-free facility, including “smokeless” cigarettes. Exit/re-entry turnstiles will be set up at Gate 4 to allow fans access in and out of the stadium if they wish to smoke. Guests must show their ticket, re-entry card and hand stamp as they pass through the metal detectors upon re-entry.

2014 Opening Day schedule

Opening DayThe season started almost a week ago.  The Cards are coming back home with a 3-3 record.  There’s no need to panic, everyone  – there’s still a lot of baseball left to be played.  Perhaps what the Cards need is a trip home to Busch Stadium.  Tomorrow, as you know, is an unofficial St. Louis holiday – Opening Day.  Thousands of fans will congregate in downtown St. Louis at various pep rallies.  Ballpark Village will be open and the Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum will have its grand opening.  Unfortunately, cool and rainy is the weather forecast for tomorrow.  Here’s hoping the good Lord have pity on us and clear up the clouds and the rain.

How Fans Can Enjoy the Day and Support the Team

ST. LOUIS – April 4, 2014 – Monday, April 7th marks the annual return of baseball to St. Louis as the Cardinals take on the Cincinnati Reds at 3:15 p.m. Opening Day 2014 will feature a formal dedication of the Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum within Cardinals Nation in Ballpark Village in the morning and a pre-game on-field ceremony that welcomes home the reigning National League Champions. Following is a schedule of official activities and information to help baseball’s best fans enjoy what has become an unofficial holiday in St. Louis. Fans are encouraged to join the social media conversation using #OpeningDaySTL.

Opening Day Ceremony

Opening Day marks the first time Cardinals fans have the opportunity to welcome home the reigning National League Champions. The Opening Day on-field ceremony will culminate in the team raising the 2013 National Championship flag – the team’s 19th National League Championship. The team will also pay tribute to the entire inaugural induction class of the new Cardinals Hall of Fame as part of the pre-game on-field ceremony. Earlier in the day (10 a.m.), the new Cardinals Hall of Fame presented by Edward Jones and the St. Louis Cardinals Museum will be formally dedicated in a special ceremony at Cardinals Nation in Ballpark Village.

The on-field pre-game ceremony at Busch will feature all four of the team’s Commissioner’s Trophies from each of those World Championship teams (’67, ’82, ’06, and ’11), as well as the introduction of the Cardinals Hall of Famers and 2014 Cardinals via a Ford motorcade. This will be the first Opening Day that Tony La Russa, who will be inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame this summer, will be introduced with the other Cardinals Hall of Famers wearing the signature red Hall of Fame jacket tailored by Brooks Brothers.

Schedule

 10 a.m.   Cardinals Hall of Fame & Museum Dedication Ceremony: The Cardinals will host an invitation-only ceremony to formally dedicate the new Cardinals Hall of Fame presented by Edward Jones and the team’s new Cardinals Museum within Cardinals Nation at Ballpark Village. While the ceremony is not open to the general public due to a lack of space, the team will live-stream the ceremony on cardinals.com and broadcast the ceremony on the outdoor Busch II scoreboard screen and on the 40 ft. television in FOX Sports Midwest Live! in Ballpark Village.

11 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Cardinals Official Opening Day Pre-Game Pep Rally, sponsored by Hardee’s:  The Cardinals and Hardee’s will host a pre-game pep rally across from the Cardinals Team Store, in the Ballpark Village parking lot. Local rock band Trixie Delight will perform from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fredbird and Team Fredbird will be on hand to give away Opening Day tickets, autographed items and other Cardinals prizes. Fans can purchase a Hardee’s Combo Meal after regular breakfast hours from the Mobile Diner or Hardee’s restaurant on Chestnut and receive a free Cardinals t-shirt while supplies last. Other sponsors include: Budweiser, First National Bank, Fox Theatre, FOX Sports Midwest, Goodwill, Krispy Kreme, Missouri Lottery, The Muny, PNC Bank, Rawlings, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Grant’s Farm and The Tan Company.

Budweiser Magnet Schedule Day:  All ticketed-fans, ages 21 and over, will receive a magnet with the 2014 Cardinals schedule, compliments of Budweiser Beer.

2:30 p.m.               Pre-game ceremonies begin with an appearance by the famed Budweiser Clydesdales.

  • Introduction of St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley, St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay, and Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder
  • Introduction of Fredbird and Team Fredbird

Fans can watch the game and pre-game ceremony in High Definition on FOX Sports Midwest.

Radio Coverage

Fans can tune into KMOX (1120 AM) or one of the 125 stations in the Cardinals Radio Network to hear Mike Shannon and John Rooney call the game. The expanded pre-game show starts at 1:40 p.m.

Online or On the Go

Fans may also follow the game for free on cardinals.com using the Gameday application, or via the team’s Twitter account, @Cardinals. From mobile devices, fans can keep tabs on the score using MLB’s mobile app, At Bat 14.

Getting to the Game

MoDOT will not have any scheduled lane closures on state highways inside the city limits for Opening Day. There have been several changes to roadways around the downtown area – most importantly on Memorial. Drivers should pay attention to the roadways, as the way they are used to coming to Cardinal games may have changed. From the Poplar Street Bridge, drivers can take the ramp to eastbound I-44 (formerly westbound I-70) to Washington. From northbound I-55, drivers can continue on eastbound I-44 to Walnut or to Washington. From eastbound I-70, drivers can take the new Tucker ramp into the city, or stay on westbound I-44 and exit at Broadway. Illinois drivers can now also use the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge to get into downtown. When they get off the bridge, they can follow Tucker into the downtown area. As usual, Clark Street will be closed in between the stadium and Ballpark Village.

Alternative Transportation

MetroLink is a convenient alternative to driving, allowing fans to avoid the cost of parking and game day traffic. To avoid the traffic congestion and the cost of parking on game day, fans can use one of 19 free Park-Ride lots along the MetroLink line and take the train to Stadium Station, right across the street from the ballpark. Check the Metro website, MetroSt.Louis.org, forschedules and the Park-Ride lot nearest you. There are also plenty of buses in Missouri and Illinois that will get fans to Busch Stadium including the RedBird Express that departs from the Water Tower at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights, Illinois. The first RedBird Express leaves 2 ½ hours before the game and runs approximately every 5 minutes. On Opening Day, the RedBird Express will start running at noon.

Ballpark Improvements

As the Cardinals begin their ninth season of play in Busch Stadium, the team has made a number of improvements to the stadium during the offseason, including sowing the seeds of another successful season with the installation of new sod. During the fall, the Cardinals installed over 100,000 square feet of new sod. The sod, which was grown in Fort Morgan, Colorado, is a four way blend of Kentucky Bluegrass set in a 10 inch root zone that is 85% sand, 10% peat and 5% Zeopro mixture.

The team, with the help of Clayco, redesigned and reconstructed 46 of the team’s 63 luxury suites. New features include new cabinets, counter tops, flooring, furniture and artwork. Each of the reconstructed suites includes upgraded appliances with in-counter food warming units. A central table concept was introduced to create a gathering space near the TV, which gives improved access to the kitchen area. Bright red tile and upholstery give energy to the new suites, while the neutral palette, wood accents and floors recreate a comfortable, club-like feel.

Behind section 172, near the visiting team’s bullpen, the Cardinals have added a manual strikeout-counter board which will allow fans sitting in those seats to place a giant “K” on the board with every Cardinals strikeout.

Additional upgrades include:

  •  New flooring throughout select areas of the ballpark
  •  Landscape fencing to protect plants and coordinate with Ballpark Village
  •  2013 National League Champion signage added to outfield wall, dugouts and exterior south wall
  •  Busch Stadium signs on the corners received a fresh coat of paint and were converted to LED lighting
  •  The Budweiser script, clock and birds on the bat above the scoreboard were replaced with a brighter and more efficient LED powered lighting. Matching signage was added to the back of the scoreboard facing the street, replacing a Bud Light sign that was previously there.
  •  600 field lights were re-lamped to 2,000 watt elements. Lights routinely need to be replaced after operating 7-8 years in order to maintain MLB required lighting levels.
  •  The center field “Bud Light Bar and Chill” was converted into the “Budweiser 1876 Bar,” and the “Captain’s Corner” in the left field pavilion area is now the “Rita Cabana” featuring Bud Light’s Lime-a-Rita and Straw-ber-Rita products.
  •  In addition to Ballpark Village being open, several changes were made to the area around Gate 4 to ensure a great view from the Village.
  •  Pedestrian sidewalk changes at Gate 2 to provide safer access for fans coming from the south. They will no longer need to walk through the parking lot.

New Menu for 2014

Delaware North Companies Sportservice, the St. Louis Cardinals’ concessionaire for more than 50 years, is preparing to welcome fans back to the Stadium with a starting lineup of food to please every fan’s unique taste. New menu items include pastrami dogs, and flatbread pizzas as well as the brand new Island Grill outside section 142 offering fresh fish tacos, crab cake sliders and a shrimp po’boy.

The Luxury Suites will feature a new ‘Butcher Block’ experience offering turkey, beef, lamb and salmon, perfectly seasoned and prepared. And to quench a Cardinal-sized thirst, there’s a new menu of drinks include premium wines on tap, a frozen apple cider and barrel-aged cocktails.

Throughout the stadium, fans will enjoy day-fresh Budweiser Beer from every tap in the building.

New Retail for 2014

From Opening Day apparel to personalized gifts, the Busch Stadium Team Store has what fans need to look their game-day best no matter their unique style. Adding to the Team Store’s exclusive selection of limited-edition Opening Day apparel and accessories, new this year is an impressive list of new lines and novelties including a designer diamond necklace. The Team Store is going all out this season – Dooney & Bourke handbags and Alex Woo fine jewelry will make their Busch Stadium debut. Among the Woo pieces is a $1,500 diamond necklace.

Under Armour has teamed up with MLB and is now offering a new clothing line for fans. In addition, novelty items will be in abundance including the limited edition bobbleheads, picnic baskets, Hello Kitty merchandise, and an expanded line of Oyo’s and accessories. Fans will also be able to choose from an expanded line of American Needle fitted hats, which features Cooperstown and St. Louis Browns logos.

Familiar fan favorites- available in all price ranges – will still be available.

Ballpark Village – A Game Changer for Cardinals Fans

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Cordish Companies celebrated the formal grand opening of the $100 million first phase of Ballpark Village (#BallparkVillage) last week.

“We believe our fans will fall in love with Ballpark Village and all that is has to offer,” said Bill DeWitt Jr, Chairman and CEO of the St. Louis Cardinals. “We anticipate that Cardinals Nation and Ballpark Village will be where the best fans in baseball will come to play all year round.”

The construction of Ballpark Village represents the next step in the Cardinals’ vision for downtown St. Louis that began with the opening of the $411 million privately-financed Busch Stadium in April 2006. Located on 10 acres just north of Busch Stadium, Ballpark Village is one of the first master-planned developments designed around a new MLB ballpark.

The approximately 120,000 square foot multi-story first phase of the multi-phased project is visible beyond the center field wall and is designed to look like an extension of Busch Stadium. The project was carefully crafted to compliment the energy and excitement of the Cardinals’ game day experience, while also functioning as a year-round attraction by itself.

The first phase of Ballpark Village is anchored by Cardinals Nation, the Budweiser Brew House, FOX Sports Midwest Live!, PBR St. Louis – A Cowboy Bar, Howl at the Moon and Drunken Fish. Ballpark Village features five live performance stages, the largest retractable roof of its kind in the United States, one of the biggest indoor TV screens in the Midwest and an outdoor festival space that recreates the infield of the previous Busch Stadium in its exact historical location.

In addition to the construction of a 120,000 square foot state-of-the-art structure housing nine marquee venues, the first phase of Ballpark Village includes the development of the site infrastructure for the future build out of the entire 10-acre site. Opening April 7th to the general public following a formal dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. that will be streamed live on cardinals.com, the new Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum within Cardinals Nation features the largest team-held collection in baseball. The collection is second only to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in terms of size with over 16,000 memorabilia items and hundreds of thousands of archival photographs. With over 8,000 square feet on the second floor of Cardinals Nation, the Museum (#CardsMuseum) celebrates the rich history of baseball in St. Louis and the legacy of one of baseball’s most storied franchises.

The new museum allows the Cardinals to showcase the team’s extensive collection of Cardinals artifacts, memorabilia and photography in a way that brings to life the amazing story of one of baseball’s most storied franchises.

The Museum walks visitors through the history of the Cardinals, beginning with the early days of Sportsman’s Park through today’s celebrated stadium and team. Each stage of the Museum has been carefully designed to reflect the historic stadium architecture and the time period being explored. The walk through history is accomplished through changing photographic pallets, case designs, and park aesthetics like appropriate woodwork and steel trusses.

The Cardinals designed the museum galleries to be fun, immersive, time-traveling experiences for all fans, whether they are long-time die-hard fans or those just beginning to fall in love with the team. The design of the new Cardinals Museum integrates historic artifacts with state-of-the-art touchscreen technology and other multi-media to create immersive environments.

The Hall of Fame: The St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame presented by Edward Jones displays the official plaques of the Cardinals players honored in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The exhibit offers a number of touch-screen interactive displays that allow fans to dig deeper into the honorees, learning more about their lives, careers, statistics, and videos from their biggest moments. The Hall of Fame is free and open to the public.

The Cardinal Way: The first gallery of the Museum showcases a feature video introducing visitors to “The Cardinal Way,” which is a philosophy on how to play baseball and develop players, created in the early days of the club and still celebrated today.

Sportsman’s Park: The second gallery transports fans back to the days of the first Cardinals ballpark. Paying homage to the “Knothole Gang,” children from the early 1900s who couldn’t afford tickets to games but would watch through the knotholes in the walls, this space allows visitors to peek into the first days of the team and experience the Broadcast Booth where they can record their own sportscaster broadcast of thrilling Cardinals moments.

Busch II: This space celebrates the players and major events during the period of the second stadium, with design touches of the field’s grasses and the famous “bottle-cap” rim of the stadium. The gallery features, like the other exhibits within the museum, a large highlight reel from the era. The film occasionally pauses and strobes flash as the crowd captures landmark grand-slams and base-steals. Amongst legendary artifacts, guests can hold the real bats from the greatest Cardinals hitters for photo opportunities in a home-plate setting.

Look of the Cardinals: A colorful, fun gallery which explores the development of the team’s logo throughout its entire history, from uniforms to memorabilia, stadiums to equipment.

Championship Gallery: Highlighted in bright gold and the flags of the World Series Championship trophies, this gallery celebrates the Cardinals’ 11 World Series Championships and numerous National League Championships, including four actual World Championship trophies.

Busch III: The sixth gallery of the new Museum is a tribute to the current baseball stadium, where fans can “interview” four recent Cardinals managers to get their different thoughts on challenging baseball topics, or explore the touch screens which display all of the statistics in real-time of the current roster.

Changing Exhibit Gallery: To accommodate the immense collection of Cardinals artifacts and memorabilia, a changing exhibit gallery will always offer something new to see for fans to come back and visit again. Exhibits may feature championships, the evolution of baseball equipment, or famous Cardinals like Stan Musial or Fredbird.

Cardinal Nation: The final gallery in the new museum is all about the fans. Visitors can input their hometown location on a massive screen, which will showcase how “Cardinal Nation” reaches across the globe. A Give-Away gallery will celebrate all of the fun, great giveaways baseball fans have received at the stadium over the years, from bobble-heads to mini bats, jerseys to World Series ring replicas. Fans can also record their answers and opinions on the Question-of-the-Week, which could get featured on the stadium’s big screen during Cardinals games. The entire experience finishes with a stylish donor wall, thanking the nearly-countless number of donors who helped make the museum, and its collection, possible.

Busch II Infield

Busch IIFans coming down for Opening Day festivities will want to check out the Busch II Infield park in Ballpark Village next to Cardinals Nation. Located outside the West entrance of Cardinals Nation, and in its exact historic home, is the Busch II infield – an outdoor park programmed with family-friendly events all year long. The turf-covered baseball diamond sits in the exact infield footprint left by Busch Stadium II (1966 – 2005). Featuring a 12 foot by 20 foot video display as part of the scoreboard, the infield provides fans a gathering place to watch the big game or enjoy an outdoor concert while eating Ted Drewes Frozen Custard at the Dugout Bar.

 While standing on the infield, memories come to life through the aide of a larger-than-life mural on the west Ballpark Village wall. Pictured is a photograph taken during a pre-game ceremony in 2005 at one of the final games at old Busch. The image provides fans with the precise view they would have had from behind home plate.

The infield park is the site of can’t miss events and can’t forget memories all year long, as well as being one of two locations that visitors can purchase St. Louis’ favorite frozen custard, Ted Drewes (the other location is within FOX Sports Midwest Live!). Ted Drewes has been selling frozen custard and Christmas trees in the St. Louis region since he opened his first Gateway City location in 1930.

BUSCH STADIUM – POLICY REMINDER

Bag Inspections Policy

  • The standard game-day bag inspection policies for Busch Stadium will be in effect. Bags will be allowed that meet Major League Baseball’s standard size restriction (16”x16”x8”), and all bags will be inspected prior to entry.
  • Fans will be permitted to bring small personal cameras and will be subject to inspection.  No professional-sized photography equipment will be allowed except for members of the media with proper MLB credentials.
  • Non-alcoholic beverages such as water and soda in open cups or in clear plastic bottles no larger than 2 liters are allowed.
  • Alcohol, bottles, cans, thermoses, hard-sided coolers; hard plastic cups/mugs are not permitted.
  • Small banners and signs are allowed.  Banners may be displayed as long as they do not hinder or interfere with a ball in play or distract or interfere with the view of another guest. Banners may not be displayed in fair territory, be obscene or in poor taste, attract abuse or cause a disturbance among other guests. They should be baseball-oriented and not commercial in nature.
  • Please minimize items you bring into the stadium to speed up the inspection process.
  • Expect long lines upon entry and allow yourself plenty of time to go through the inspection process.

Exit/Re-entry Policy

Standard Exit/Re-entry Policies are in effect. Guests wishing to leave the stadium, but planning to return during the same game must have their hand stamped at Gates 1, 2 or 4 as they exit the stadium. Guests must show ticket upon re-entry. Inspection policy will also be enforced.

No Smoking Policy

Standard Busch Stadium Smoking Policy is in effect. Busch Stadium is a smoke-free facility. Exit/Re-Entry turnstiles will be set up at Gates 1, 2 and 4 to allow fans access in and out of the stadium if they wish to smoke. Fans will get their hand stamped as they exit the stadium. Guests must show ticket upon re-entry. Inspection policy will also be enforced.

Happy new baseball season!

Opening DayIt’s Opening Day, the beginning of a new season.  Even Cubs fans have new hope on this first day of the season.  Could this be the year the Cubs finally make it to the World Series? No, probably not.

Some folks are comparing Opening Day to Christmas Day, but I think Opening Day is more like New Year’s Day. Like the New Year, the season is shiny and new.  Every team is at the same place in the standings (with the exception of those teams who have already played games).  Anything is possible.

On Christmas Day, you get and give presents.  On New Year’s Day, you make resolutions, like to lose weight, exercise more, etc.  Here are some resolutions I would like the Cardinals to make for the new season:

1.      The need for speed.  Turning a single into a double, running out an infield hit, etc. will help get more men on base and as a result, score more runs.

2.      More stolen bases. A stolen base puts a runner in scoring position, and a hit will bring them home.

3.     Quit swinging for the fences.  Yes, Matt Adams, I’m especially talking to you.  Every hit is a good hit – just get on base. If the ball happens to land over the fence, that’s great, but you will be missing out on a chance to get on base if you strike out.  Don’t be afraid to take a walk, either.

4.     Pay attention on the base paths. Don’t get caught in a rundown.  And don’t forget to watch the first and third base coaches.  They will let you know when you should run and when you should stay on base.

5.     Be patient at the plate.  Don’t swing at the first pitch.   Wait for your pitch before swinging.  It’s not good to leave runners on base.

As I post this, the Cards-Reds game is still going on.  Thanks to Carlos Martinez, the Cards are still leading 1-0.  The home opener, as you know, is next Monday.  I’ll be at the pep rally at Ballpark Village, so come by if you can and say hi.   Thanks for reading and see you next time!

Opening Day pep rally fun

Opening Day in downtown St. Louis is an unofficial holiday.  And since it is a holiday, there are parties, better known as pep rallies.  I thought I’d write a post about the various Opening Day pep rallies, for those out of town or those locals who are nowhere near downtown on Opening Day. I work 2 blocks from Busch Stadium at 8th and Market, so it was an easy walk for me to most of these rallies.  I spent my lunch half-hour (okay, more like 40 minutes) visiting the rallies. The photos posted below are from my cell phone, so I apologize in advance if the quality is not the greatest.

The first pep rally I went to was the official Opening Day pep rally (the one that the Cardinals sponsor) was located in front of the Team Store at Busch Stadium this year.  This rally used to be held at the corner of Broadway and Clark Street, but now that Ballpark Village construction is underway, the pep rally had to find a new home.

Hardee’s had a food booth and if you bought a combo deal, you got a free t-shirt.There were Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme samples.  The Muny had a wheel you could spin to win free tickets to see a musical.  That line went down most of the block on Clark Street and since I was on my lunch break, I didn’t join the line.

You could get your photo taken with Yadi Molina’s Gold Glove and Platinum Glove.  But that line was long also, so I just settled for taking a photo of both Gloves.

Next, I walked over to the pep rally sponsored by local TV station KSDK at Joe Buck’s Restaurant at 10th and Clark, which was located behind the restaurant.  They gave away harmonicas in memory of Stan Musial. The line for those was very long, so I didn’t get one. There was a band playing here too, and the station also gave away a pair of tickets to the home opener.  I got in there just in time to see Mike Bush and Sara Dayley (yes, she’s Ken Dayley’s daughter) interview Lou Brock.  I was within 5 feet of him, the closest I’ve ever been.

The largest pep rally was held in Kiener Plaza, which is located between Broadway and 7th Street.  There were food vendors, beer and alcohol vendors, and various businesses with giveaways. There was a band playing at this pep rally too.  This pep rally was the most crowded of all the pep rallies I attended. The water in the Kiener Plaza fountain was dyed red in honor of the Cardinals’ Opening Day.

KMOX sponsored a pep rally called Kegs & EggsWhat an odd name for a pep rally, you think.  But brunch (eggs) and beer (kegs) were served at this rally.  This is the only pep rally that had an admission fee.  It was held on the parking lot of the Tums factory on South 6th Street.  Good thing the Tums factory is next door – you might need some of their products if you eat too much food and drink too much beer.

Here’s a few tips for you, should you decide to go to Opening Day pep rallies next year:

  1. Get there early.  The rally at Busch Stadium started at 11 AM but the other 2 rallies started at 10 AM.
  2. Wear your walking shoes, especially if you plan on attending all the rallies.  There’s some hiking involved.
  3. Travel light and tight.  Bring the bare minimum, such as your cell phone and your wallet.  A jacket with pockets, a fanny pack or a cross-body bag are ideal.  There are lots of people at these rallies and it’s easier to get through the crowd when you don’t have to worry about carrying a large bag.
  4. Bring cash.  Not a lot, just enough to purchase food and drink.  The vendors probably don’t have credit card readers and if they did, using them would hold up the line behind you. If you’re also planning on going to the game, you’ll need cash for the beer vendors if you choose to imbibe.
  5. If you’re sensitive to loud music, wear earplugs.  The volume of the bands at all three locations were very loud.
  6. Bring a pen to fill out giveaway entries faster.
  7. If your cell phone doesn’t have a camera, bring your camera.
  8. If possible, take the MetroLink train or MetroBus.  Although the Hyatt offers some free parking meters, downtown parking tickets are expensive.  Stadium Garage parking is $20.00 a car. There are other parking lots within walking distance of the stadium, but they’re not cheap either.
  9. Observe traffic lights and only walk when there is either no traffic or you have a walk light.  I can’t tell you how many people I saw today crossing the street in front of cars. I’m really surprised no one got hit.
  10. Have fun!

The Cards lost 12-4.  It sucks to lose on Opening Day.  Hopefully, the next 2 games will go better.
