Cardinals are (will be) doing it for themselves

(Sorry, Annie Lennox, for appropriating your song title.) Unfortunately, the last couple of days, the Cards haven’t been doing it for themselves.  They lost a 19 inning marathon on Tuesday and a B team (except for Tommy Edman) lineup game on Wednesday at Arizona.  And the Reds were no help to the Cards – they could not beat the juggernaut better known as the Milwaukee Brewers, who have a 9-1 record in the last 10 games, and winning the last 7 games in a row.  And that’s without Christian Yelich, who broke his kneecap when it was hit by a foul ball.  The Brewers are not going to lay down and die, and they play the Rockies this weekend.  I’m not sure the Rockies will give the Cards any help either.

The Cards may have some assistance from an unlikely candidate.  On Twitter tonight, Paul Sullivan posted the following:

Joe Maddon has nothing to lose – the Cubs are out of the playoffs and it appears that he will be out of a job at the end of the season. If the Cubs play their B lineup, the Cards can beat the Cubs and squish the Brewers’ hopes of winning the division.

My fellow blogger Adam Van Grack posted a tweet today with how the wild card/NL Central could play out this weekend. He explained it much better than I could, so I post it here:

So even if the Cubs cooperate, it looks like the Cards indeed will be doing it for themselves.  Dakota Hudson is the starting pitcher Friday night and Adam Wainwright will be the starting pitcher on Saturday night.  Sunday night’s pitcher is to be determined.  Which pitcher will be used Sunday night will probably depend on what happens in the other two games.  And it’s the last homestand of the season.  Hopefully, this weekend’s games won’t be the last home games until next year.  Here are all the details for this weekend’s homestand:

HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS (Friday, September 27—Sunday, September 29)

Final Homestand to Determine National League Central Division Winner

The Cardinals return to Busch assured of a playoff berth, but just one game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central.  The thirteenth homestand of the season brings the rival Chicago Cubs in for the final three games of the regular season (September 27-29).  Depending on this weekend’s results, the Cardinals could clinch the Central division title as early as Saturday or be forced to play a tiebreaker game against the Brewers on Monday at Busch Stadium.
