Random thoughts and Homestand Highlights for August 30-September 5

The Cards’ last homestand went very well.  They won 6 out of 7 games.  The only game they lost was the August 21 rain-shortened game, thanks to the umps.  Manager Mike Shildt wasn’t very happy about that.

In player moves, Junior Fernandez was brought up and then sent back down.  Ryan Helsley then came back up from Memphis.  Harrison Bader came back to the big club from Memphis and showed more patience at the plate.  He even drew some walks.  I think the temporary detention was helpful.

The Cards’ bats were taken out of the deep freeze and they were on fire this last homestand.  Perhaps the firing of Mark Budaska was a good idea after all.  The Cards beat the Brewers by the scores of 3-0 and 9-4. During the Monday night game, Paul DeJong hit a home run so hard it broke the “M” in the Big Mac Land sign.  I was given bleacher seats by someone at work for the Wednesday night game.  It’s hard to cheer enthusiastically when you’re surrounded by Rockies fans.  We left as soon as we saw lightning and the grounds crew took the cover off of the tarp.  The Cards were just getting warmed up, however.  The team then beat the Rockies by the scores of 6-5, 8. 3,. 6-0, and 11-4.

The son and I were at the Sunday game.  There is an attorney at work that has season tickets on the first base side, 3 rows off of the field.  I helped him with a project when his assistant was out of the office, so he let me select a game I wanted to go to.  I chose Sunday’s game because the giveaway was a 1944 World Series replica ring, and I wanted it to add to my collection.  There was an over 2-hour rain delay. If it had kept raining, the grounds crew would have had to build an ark. The son was ready to go home, but I told him we’d go out one more time and see if the rain had stopped.  It had, and the grounds crew were taking the tarp off of the field, so we stayed.  That second inning was crazy, though!  The Cards’ whole lineup batted that inning and the first three batters in the lineup for a total of 12 batters.  I ran out of room on my scorecard for the second inning.  I had to put the remaining 3 batters in the second inning in the 10th inning column.  I’ve never had that happen in all the years I’ve been keeping score.  We weren’t planning on being there so late, so I had to go to the concession stand to get dinner.  I bought a chicken tenders and fries basket for me, nachos for the son, and a 21 oz. soda and a souvenir soda. I spent $42.00.  Now I know why I bring food to the ballpark.

After that, the Cards had a short series at Milwaukee.  They won 2 out of the three games but lost yesterday’s game.  The team had a well-earned day off today – they hadn’t had a day off since August 12.  We’re getting closer to the end of the season, so the Cards can’t put on the brakes now.  They’re in first place now by a game and a half.  The Cards need to keep winning to keep the Cubs from taking the division.  Here’s hoping the Cards don’t wait until the last weekend of the series to clinch the pennant.  That kind of suspense just drives me crazy.

The Cards return home tomorrow night for a 7 game homestand.  Some of the giveaways are pretty sweet, especially the Yadier Molina Funko POP! figurine on Labor Day.  Will you be going to any of the games during this homestand?  If so, here are all the details:

Homestand Highlights for August 19-25, 2019

The Cardinals’ last road trip was very productive.  They won both games in Kansas City and split the series with Cincinnati.  The only games that the Cards lost were the Wednesday and Saturday games in Cincinnati.  The Cards’ bats were hot on Friday (they won 13-4), but they only scored one run the night before and the night after that. The Cards’ bats need to be more consistent.  If the team could get the hitting going consistently, they could run away with the NL Central.  As of this writing, the Cards are tied with the Cubs for first place.  The Cards play the Brewers this week, and they could push the Brewers further down the standings with a successful series.   The Cubs need to get pushed down the standings too.

Can I be frank?  Those Saturday road uniforms have got to go.  They are bad luck.  The Cards have only won one game that they have played while wearing the Saturday road uniforms.  The blue road uniforms have even brought bad luck to their model, Harrison Bader – he is still down in Memphis, although it looks like he is regaining his swing.  If the Cards wanted to go with the blue uniforms, they should have just reissued the 1980s uniforms.  Sometimes you can’t improve on a classic.

The Cards return home for a seven-game homestand against Milwaukee and, for the first time this season, the Rockies.  Thankfully, the Cards play the Rockies at home and not at Coors Field.  Now that school is back in session, the weekday evening games will start at 6:45 PM and not at 7:15 PM, through the end of the season. It would be nice if the 7:15 PM games started at 6:45 PM all season long.  I usually don’t get back home from 7:15 PM weeknight games until 11:00 PM if I stay until the end of the game.

Here are all the details about the upcoming homestand, which includes the Cardinals Hall of Fame induction ceremony information:

Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer

What a crazy last two weeks it’s been for the Cardinals.  The transactions alone these last two weeks have been dizzying. You couldn’t even fit them all on a scorecard. On July 29, Harrison Bader was optioned to Memphis, and hopefully there he will find the batting stroke he has lost.  Bader is still at Memphis, sadly enough for us ladies who enjoy watching him on the field. Perhaps the Cards will call him back for his bobblehead night on August 23. On July 30, the Cards claimed LHP Adalberto Mejia off waivers from the Angels.  The Cards designated Mejia for assignment on August 6, and the Angels reclaimed Mejia on August 8.  Easy come, easy go?

On July 31, Daniel Ponce de Leon was optioned to Memphis.  Matt Carpenter was assigned to Memphis for rehab on August 1 and was activated on August 4.  Yadier Molina was assigned to Memphis for rehab on August 1. On August 8, Yadi was sent to Springfield for rehab.  On August 3, Tyler O’Neill was put on the 10-day injured list for a wrist sprain. On August 4, RHP Mike Mayers was designated for assignment, Rangel Ravelo was optioned to Memphis, and Ryan Helsley was recalled (for the 6th time) from Memphis.  On August 6, Adalberto Mejia was designated for assignment, Mike Mayers was sent outright to Memphis, and the contract of RFP Junior Hernandez was purchased from Memphis.

The trade deadline was a disaster.  The only deal Mo made was to trade Jedd Gyorko to the Dodgers for cash, international cap space, LHP Tony Cingrani (who is on the injured list until after the season because of a shoulder injury and is a free agent after the season and RHP Jeffry Abreu (a minor league pitcher).  The team needed a starting pitcher and an outfielder and Mo obtained neither.  The only other acquisition was on July 29, when the Cards picked up LHP Zac Rosscup for cash from the Dodgers. Rosscup went straight to Memphis.  Some of my fellow bloggers and most of Cardinals Twitter agree it’s long past time for John Mozeliak to be fired.  If the Cardinals don’t make the playoffs for the fourth straight year, I believe Mo will go.

When last I wrote (July 25, 2019), the Cardinals were in a hot streak.  The bats were hot and so was the team. However, since then, things have taken a nosedive.  The Cardinals had a California road trip from August 3 – 7 and they didn’t win a single game.  The bats that once appeared to be on fire are back in the deep freeze.  Jack Flaherty pitched a masterful game yesterday with no win to show for it.  I believe the players are angry that Mo didn’t get help for them at the trade deadline, especially since they played so hard to get to first place. Their bats are on strike. The Cards are now 3 ½ games back in the NL Central.

If, after all of the above, you still want to see the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, the Cards return home tomorrow night for the shortest homestand of the year – 3 games.  The Dynamic Deal for Friday night’s game ($10.00 tickets with a free hot dog and soda, plus the promo item) was too good to pass up, so the son and I will be there. Here are all the homestand highlights:
