First half of the season review and Homestand Highlights for July 12-17, 2019

The first half of the season was a great disappointment.  The team finshed at .500 and the offense seems to have disappeared. The starting pitching has been, well, meh.  Jordan Hicks, the Cards’ 100 MPH closer, had to have Tommy John surgery.  Marcel Ozuna, who would have probably been the team’s All-Star Game selection, was injured when he slid into first base.

Yet there were some bright spots in the first half. Tommy Edman was called up from Memphis and he is a spark plug. The bullpen has performed well. Paul DeJong was the lone Cardinal selection for the All-Star Game, and he played great – he drew a walk and stole third base, and turned two double plays.  Matt Wieters, backing up Yadier Molina, has done a great job in front of and behind the plate.  Even though the Cards are at .500, they are only two and a half games out from first place – the Cubs and Brewers are playing as poorly as the Cards are.

In other news today, Matt Carpenter has been activated from the injured list.  Yadi Molina, however, has been placed on the IL, retroactive to July 8.  Andrew Knizner has been recalled from Memphis to back up Matt Wieters, and Chasen Shreve’s contract has been purchased from Memphis.  Tyler Webb and Rangel Ravelo have been optioned to Memphis and Jordan Hicks has been placed on the 60 day IL to make room for Shreve.  Whew!  The Hwy. 55 Express has been busy.

The second half of the season starts tomorrow night.  Will the Cards make the playoffs?  The bats need to catch fire and the starting pitching needs to gel.  And the Cubs and Brewers need to collapse.  The possibility of all of these happening are probably slim to none, but a fan can dream, can’t she? If the Cards don’t make the playoffs this year for the fourth year in a row, I believe some changes will have to be made at the front office level.

The Cards come home for a six night homestand starting tomorrow night  Here are all the details you need to know about this homestand:
