Oh, the merry month of May . . .

has not been very merry for the Cardinals, who have not won a single series in the month of May. In fact, the Cardinals have only won 8 games in the month of May, including today’s game. I attended 2 Cardinals games in the month of May in the same week and the Cardinals lost both of them. That has never happened in my memory. I’m sure the Cardinals and their fans are glad that tomorrow is the last day of May. Perhaps when the calendar turns to June 1, the team will play better. The Blues won their first ever Stanley Cup final game last night and the Cards won today’s game, so perhaps a corner has been turned.

There has been a lot going wrong this month that has been covered by my fellow bloggers, but I’d like to talk about just one thing – Michael Wacha. Wacha hasn’t pitched well at all this season. After a bad outing against the Royals when he allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings, Michael was shifted to the bullpen on May 24. His first relief appearance last night was horrendous when he gave up three home runs in an inning. I felt bad for Genesis Cabrera, who was making his major league debut, that his start ended that way. Wacha’s bad pitching is not a good look for a player who will be a free agent at the end of the year. I think Wacha is injured again – perhaps another shoulder impingement – and he’s not telling anyone or the team is in denial that he’s hurt. If I were John Mozeliak (and I’m sure people are glad I’m not), I would make Wacha get an MRI to check for structural damage. I sincerely hope that Wacha is not hurt, but an injury would certainly explain his bad pitching.

Two of the Cardinals’ intra-division rivals, the Cubs and the Reds. come to town for the next homestand, which starts tomorrow. The Cards need to win both of these series so they can start a long winning streak. The offense needs to catch fire and the bullpen needs to hold the lead for that to be possible. Here is all the information you’ll need if you’re coming to any of the games in this homestand:
