Oh, for a song

Congratulations to the St. Louis Blues, who won the Western Conference finals last night and will be in the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 49 years!  The Cardinals have had some long droughts between World Series appearances, but none of them were 49 years long.  Even some of our Cardinals like Yadier Molina (who drinks Bud Light just like us peasants, despite the fact that he could afford any beer served at the Enterprise Center) and Adam Wainwright are Blues fans, as you can see by their posts on Twitter and Instagram.  It’s nice to see the Cards players support the other hometown team who play right down the street from them. Last night’s Cardinals game was postponed due to inclement weather, and I can just see Yadi asking the powers that be to postpone the game so that he and Adam could attend the Blues game.  LOL!

The Blues’ story this season is a fascinating one. The Blues were in last place as recently as January 2019, but now they’re in the Stanley Cup finals. The story is even more interesting by the fact they have a theme song that plays after every victory, and that song is “Gloria” by the late Laura Branigan.  For an explanation on how “Gloria” became the Blues’ theme song, you can read about it here.  Even more interesting is how the Blues fans, in unison, sing “Take Me Home Country Roads” by the late John Denver during the third period of every game.  I saw it for the first time during last night’s game and it gave me goosebumps.  The only thing in baseball I can think of that’s similar is when the Red Sox fans sing along to Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.” Laila Anderson, a young lady who suffers from a rare autoimmune disease, is the Blues’ greatest cheerleader, and some of the Blues players say she inspires them to fight harder.  And Charles Glenn, who sings the National Anthem in extraordinary fashion before every Blues game, is retiring after the last game of the season, whenever that is. And the Blues are playing the Boston Bruins (another Boston team to intimidate St. Louis!  Oh!), who defeated them in 1970, the last time the Blues were in the Stanley Cup finals.  There is a lot of back story and drama even besides what’s happening on the ice.

The Cards need a theme song of their own.  The Time to Fly catchphrase that is being used by the Cardinals in their promotional materials this year would be a good starting point for an original theme song.   A theme song is a rallying point for the fans and fires up the team.  When you hear the theme song in later years, it will bring back good memories of that season.

Suggestions for a theme song for the Cardinals, anyone?  No rap songs or any songs with bad language or sexual situations – it has to be clean enough for kids to sing.  Back in the day, I used to write songs, but nowadays, I would rather write blog posts. Those words don’t need to rhyme.

The theme song idea is not totally unprecedented.  In 1982, the Cardinals’ theme song was “Celebrate” by Kool and the Gang.  (This song also has the distinction of being the only song to have been played at both my wedding receptions, in 1981 and 1992.) In 1985, the Cardinals’ theme song was “The Heat is On” by the late Glenn Frey.  In 1987, the Cardinals’ theme song was “You Belong to the City,” also by the late Glenn Frey. You will note, however, that the Cardinals played in the World Series all three of those years.

A theme song would be a good start, but the Cards need much more than that to happen if they are to break out of this slump and start winning again.  The Cards are mired in a huge slump.  They are 2-8 in their last 10 games.  The Cards lost the first game of the doubleheader today to the Royals 8-2 due to some rough pitching by Michael Wacha.  Personally, I think Wacha is injured again. Alex Reyes is rehabbing and should be coming up soon, but I think it’s time for Mo to sign a starting pitcher like Dallas Keuchel.  There needs to be a big shakeup like last July, but let’s not wait until then, okay?

I do hope that the Blues finally win the Stanley Cup this year.  The Bruins are a tough team, so it will be a rough series. The boys at 14th & Clark have thrown down the gauntlet, so the team at 7th & Clark needs to step it up. Wouldn’t it be great, though, if the Blues win the Stanley Cup and the Cards win the World Series in the same year?  That has never happened in Chicago.
