Homestand Highlights for April 19-April 28, 2019

The Cards return home to Busch Stadium after a road trip to Mexico to play the Cincinnati Reds (splitting the series) and a trip to Milwaukee to get beat almost single-handedly by Christian Yelich. (Okay, the guys won Thursday’s game.) Marcell Ozuna must have read my last blog post because he’s suddenly playing much better. Harrison Bader is sadly on the injured list with a right hamstring strain. Here’s hoping he gets better soon. Tyler O’Neill is also on the IL.

Tonight is the start of the longest homestand of the season. The son and I will be at Tuesday night’s game. It’s College Night, and even though I received my associate’s degree in 1981, it counts, right? So I deserve a theme night jacket. It’s also the T-shirt of the month night, so we get two promotions for the price of one.

Here are all the details of what’s happening during this homestand:

HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS (Friday, April 19—Sunday, April 28)

Whew! That’s a lot of information!  Thanks as always for reading and have a happy Easter!

Diane

What, me worry? Well, maybe just a little.

The cartoon figure in the clip art above is Alfred E. Neumann, the mascot of Mad magazine.  Alfred’s catchphrase was “What, me worry?”  The Cardinals’ bats are starting to catch fire, but I still have some concerns this early in the season. Let’s discuss.

The Cards’ pitchers are giving up too many walks.  The son and I were gifted with 2 free tickets to Saturday’s (4/6/19) game.  (Thanks, Sandy!) Before we left in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Cards’ pitchers had given up 9 walks.  That’s too many.  What’s especially bad is when the first batter in the inning gets a walk.  Then the next batter moves the first batter to second base, etc. What’s even worse is if the walks put runners on base and a batter hits a home run, like in Saturday’s game. The walk creates a run that didn’t need to happen and could cost the team to lose a game.  Let’s tighten it up, guys, and not give up so many walks.

What’s up with Marcell Ozuna?   The play he made in the outfield in Tuesday night’s game was truly bizarre.  He climbed the wall to try to catch the ball and the ball landed two feet in front of him.  He caught one of his spikes in the turf when he landed and he could have gotten hurt.  This wasn’t the first oddball play he’s attempted to make.  And in last night’s game, he had a baserunning gaffe.  Has Marcell had his sight checked lately?  Sure, his hitting has improved but his fielding and throwing are sorely lacking.  It makes me wonder how he was ever awarded a Gold Glove.  And he came to spring training overweight and out of shape, plus his shoulder wasn’t quite where it was supposed to be.  This is not a good look for a player in a walk year.  If he keeps it up, he may not get a contract at all, let alone a good one.

Michael Wacha.  He’s been giving up a lot of walks (7 on Saturday when we were there) and home runs (3 in today’s game alone).  Is Wacha having problems with his shoulder again?

Dexter Fowler’s hitting.  The season started on March 28, and Dexter just got his first RBI during last night’s game (4/10/19). This is not ideal at all.

Lest you think I’m a complete Debbie Downer, however, there are some good things happening this spring.  I’m glad that the Cardinals signed Miles Mikolas, Jose Martinez, and Matt Carpenter to contract extensions.  It’s best to get contract extensions out of the way early in the year, or even during spring training, I think.  It gives the players confidence that the team wants them and has confidence in their abilities, and that reflects in their performance. The players don’t wonder all season whether their contracts are going to be renewed or not.

Center fielder Harrison Bader has made some dandy plays, considering he not only has to cover his position but back up Marcell Ozuna as well.  And Kolten Wong has done a great job this season.  Having Paul Goldschmidt at first base gives Kolten confidence to make those incredible plays. Kolten’s bat is on fire this year too.  And speaking of bats on fire, Paul DeJong’s bat is smokin’ hot.

The Cardinals swept the Dodgers this week, and now they’re on a happy flight to Mexico, where they play the Reds this weekend. One word of advice – don’t drink the water, guys! Montezuma’s Revenge is painful!

Thanks as always for reading! See you next time!

Homestand Highlights for April 6-11, 2019

The opening ceremonies at today’s game were awe-inspiring as always.  It was great to see the Hall of Famers, although I missed seeing Red. Home Opening Day for 2019 is tomorrow!

Actually, the home opener was supposed to be today, but Mother Nature decided to send showers to rain on the Cardinals’ parade.  The smart decision was made to postpone the game until Friday, April 5.  The weathercasters were correct for a change; it rained all afternoon in downtown St. Louis.  There is an off day after the home opener built into the schedule every year in case of inclement weather.

All of the festivities that would have happened today will be occurring tomorrow. Will you be there?  I have to work, but hope to sneak a look at the opening festivities on the Fox Sports Go app on my Kindle (shh, don’t tell my boss!)  I used to be able to see the scoreboard from the office across from my desk, but the Live by Loewe’s building being built on the corner of 8th and Clark is blocking my once lovely view.

Without further ado, here is the list of all of the festivities that will be occurring tomorrow afternoon.

Getting To The Game

Per MoDOT, motorists should be aware of the following on-going road closures:

  • I-44, St. Louis City, one eastbound lane closed from Murdoch to the River Des Peres through December.
  • I-44, St. Louis City, one eastbound lane closed from Hampton to Grand through December.

As usual, Clark Street will be closed to vehicular traffic in between the stadium and Ballpark Village.

Fans coming to the game will notice some construction near the ballpark with the work underway to build the second phase of Ballpark Village.  While some areas are closed off to vehicular traffic, pedestrian access remains open to Ballpark Village as well as Clark Street.  Fans are encouraged to allow extra time and pay attention to signs as they make their way to the ballpark.

Alternative Transportation

MetroLink is a convenient alternative to driving.  To avoid the traffic congestion and the cost of parking on game days, fans can use one of 21 free Park-Ride lots along the MetroLink line and take the train to Stadium Station, right across the street from the ballpark.  MetroLink will have additional security and personnel located throughout the light rail system to assist passengers on Thursday.  MetroLink will also monitor platforms for crowds and will add extra trains to service as needed.  Visit MetroStLouis.org or download the Metro On The Go app for schedules and Park-Ride lots nearest you.

There are also plenty of buses in Missouri and Illinois that will get fans to Busch Stadium including the Redbird Express that departs from the Water Tower at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights, Illinois.  On Opening Day, the first Redbird Express bus will leave at 10:15 a.m. and the last bus will leave at 2:35 p.m.  MetroBus is another great option for getting downtown.  Fans can catch the #40 Broadway or #99 Downtown Trolley, which both have stops near Busch Stadium.

Prohibited Items Policy

  • Not Permitted: Backpacks, alcohol, thermoses, hard-sided coolers, aluminum or glass cans/bottles, commercial camera equipment

Ballpark Improvements

A number of physical improvements have been made within Busch Stadium to improve the fan experience:

  • Stadium Lights: The St. Louis Cardinals in partnership with PLANLEDTM have installed a new, state-of-the-art lighting system in Busch Stadium.  The new lights will improve the visual experience for players and guests as well as reduce operating and energy costs. The system will have the highest, true-to-life color rendering in an outdoor sports venue.

I highly recommend it.

Oh, and by the way, there’s a ballgame being played tomorrow.  I’m hoping that the Cardinals will play better now that they’re back home.  Tomorrow night, I’ll post the Homestand Highlights for the rest of the first homestand of the 2019 season.  Go Cards!
