The top 5 Cardinals stories of 2015

Top 5Where did the time go?  It’s hard to believe that 2015 is almost over.  In just three days, a new year begins.  It’s time for the December United Cardinals Blogger project, which is to write about what we feel are the top 5 Cardinals stories of the year.

This year was certainly an interesting but frustrating year for the Cardinals.  Here are my choices for the top 5 Cardinals stories of the year.  They aren’t in any particular order.

The hacking investigation.  This was likely the most bizarre Cardinals story of the year.  It was discovered that someone from the Cardinals organization had hacked into the database of ex-Cardinals employee Jeff Luhnow, now general manager of the Astros.  The hack was traced to a house in Jupiter, Florida, which is where the Cardinals staffers hold spring training.  Eventually, Chris Correa, the former director of scouting for the Cardinals, was fired. The FBI investigation of the hacking incident is ongoing.

Adam Wainwright’s Achilles tendon injury.  Once again, Adam missed almost a full season of baseball, although this time the injury was not to his pitching arm.  It was predicted that Adam would miss the whole season, but he made an amazing comeback and pitched a few innings as a reliever at the end of the season.  The Cardinals would have won even more games if Adam had been healthy, but his absence as a starter was most felt in the NLDS.  Adam would have likely started Game 1 and Lackey would have then started Game 2.  Garcia would have felt well enough to start Game 3 in Chicago and the Cards may have won the NLDS.

The Cards win 100 games for the first time since 2005.  Despite all the injuries and all the drama, the Cardinals managed to win 100 games in the 2015 season and won the NL Central for the third year in a row, which is a lot better record than most other teams had.

John Lackey and Jason Heyward defect to the Cubs.  I figured that Lackey would sign with the Cubs to go hang with his BFF Jon Lester.  But when Jason Heyward signed with the Cubs (and took a doggone long time to do so, prompting the Twitter hashtag #thingsfasterthanHeywooddecision), Cardinals fans felt like a bride jilted at the altar. We had hoped that Jason would stay around a while.  He seemed to understand the Cardinal Way.  In the end, however, Jason was a one-year rental. And his explanation that he didn’t want to be “the man” once Yadi, Adam and Matt retire rings hollow. The loss of Oscar Tavares stings even more now.

The early exit from the playoffs.  The Cards made the playoffs for the fifth year in a row.  However, the Cards couldn’t beat the Cubs in the NLDS, winning only Game 1, which is the playoff game I attended.  This was highly disappointing, not only for me since we had tickets to NLCS Game 7 but for all Cardinals fans, especially losing to the Cubs.  Hopefully, next year the Cards will go further in the playoffs.

That’s all for now! This will probably be my last blog post for 2015 unless something exciting happens that I just have to post about.  So I wish all my loyal readers a happy, healthy prosperous 2015 and may the Cardinals win their 12th World Series next year!

Cardinals sign Mike Leake to 5 year contract

LeakeWe Cardinals fans have been good girls and boys, and we haven’t complained – well, not too much.  There’s no coal in our stockings this year – Santa Mo gave us a starter for Christmas.  What a nice gift! Thank you, Santa Mo!

Mike Leake will be a good fit for the team.  And he’s a great hitter too.  Now all the Cardinals need is a power hitter that can play first base, and our Christmas wish list will be complete. (Santa Mo, you have a couple of days left to get that done.) Here are all the details on the Leake signing:

CARDS SIGN FREE-AGENT PITCHER MIKE LEAKE;

RIGHT-HANDED STARTER AGREES TO FIVE-YEAR DEAL THRU 2020

ST. LOUIS, MO, December 22, 2015– The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed free-agent pitcher Mike Leake to a five-year deal for the 2016-20 seasons with a mutual option for 2021.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to announce the addition of Mike Leake to our starting rotation,” stated Cardinals Senior Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak. “Mike is considered to be one of the game’s most consistent performers and he is certainly no stranger to the National League and the N.L. Central.  His proven experience and all-around ability should be a real plus for us.”

Leake, 28, will join a Cardinals starting rotation that already consists of All-Stars Adam Wainwright, Michael Wacha and Carlos Martinez and veteran lefty Jaime Garcia.

Leake owns a career mark of 64-52 with a 3.88 ERA in six seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2010-15) and San Francisco Giants (2015), ranking fifth in the National League in both innings pitched (1,083.2) and games started (172) during that time span.  Leake went 11-10 with a 3.70 ERA in 30 starts (192.0 IP) between the Reds and Giants in 2015, and because he was traded during the season, the Cardinals will not have to forfeit a compensatory draft selection next season.

While pitching at hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park (4.28 ERA in 90 games) throughout most of his career, Leake has fashioned a 3.48 career ERA on the road, including a 3.19 mark in six career games (42.1 innings pitched) at Busch Stadium III.   His 3.48 road ERA since 2010 is ranked fifth among all N.L. pitchers (min. 500 IP).

The 5’ 10”, 190 lb. native of Southern California was the Reds’ first round draft selection (eighth player overall) in 2009 out of Arizona State University.  After pitching in the prospect-rich Arizona Fall League that year, he vaulted directly to the majors, where he debuted in April of 2010.

Leake, who has won 10 or more games four times in six seasons, including a career-high 14 in 2013, has made 30-plus starts in each of the past four (2012-15) seasons.  He ranked second among N.L. pitchers in fewest pitches/inning (14.3) last season and was eighth in double plays/9 innings pitched (1.03) and eleventh in ground ball percentage. (52.1).

Leake is considered to be an accomplished player with the bat as well, ranking first in hits (77), first in doubles (16), third in slugging percentage (.321), fourth in home runs (6) and fourth in RBI (23) among all pitchers since 2010.

With today’s signing of Leake, the Cardinals’ 40-man Major League roster currently stands at 38 players. (So there is room for a power hitting first baseman, Santa Mo.)

Sorry I didn’t get to post a Christmas gift guide this year.  I was really busy this month.  I hope you found the Cardinals Christmas presents you needed for that special fan on your list.  Until next time, have a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2016!

Reflections on the hot stove league and the whole Heyward thing

I was at my work Christmas party on Friday when I found out that Jason Heyward had signed with the Cubs.  While waiting for the server to bring me a beer, I was going to open up Twitter on my phone when my husband called me to tell me the sorry news that Heyward had signed with the Cubs. “The Cubs?” I asked. “You have got to be kidding me.”

Unfortunately, he was not kidding, and like other Cards fans, I have been alternatively angry and sad most of the weekend.  It felt like a stab in the back that Heyward would choose the Cubs over the Cards.  Indeed, there were lots of fans on Twitter Friday that called Heyward a traitor, although some of them could not spell and called him a trader instead.  The Cubs-Cards rivalry has taken a darker turn.  Next year’s Cards-Cubs games could be very interesting indeed.

Heyward’s contract with the Cubs calls for two opt-out clauses.  If Heyward exceeds certain plate appearance thresholds, he can opt out in year 3 or year 4 of his contract.  The Nationals and Cardinals offered Heyward more money, but the opt-out clauses were probably more important to Heyward, so he could leave the Cubs and make even more money.  But I’m wondering (and I think others might be too) whether there was something more going on that would make Heyward sign with the Cubs and not with the Cards.

Now that my emotions are in check, it’s time to look at the Heyward situation more rationally.  I am reminded of how the Cards lost Pujols to the Angels in 2012.  Everyone thought that it was the end of the world then, that the Cards wouldn’t be any good without Pujols, etc.  But one player does not a team make.  The Cards have done well without Pujols. They have made it to the playoffs three years in a row and the Angels have not.  I think in the long run we should be thankful that Heyward didn’t sign with the Cards.  The front office can use the money that would have been offered to Heyward to sign other players – that is, if they will sign other players.  The front office hasn’t seemed to be in any hurry to sign any free agents.

The Cards do have some excellent young outfielders that should help fill the gap left by Heyward’s departure.  The front office obviously thinks so too, because Mo said that the team will not pursue a big name outfielder in the off season.  Mo should start looking this year, however, because Matt Holliday’s contract is up at the end of 2016.  Holliday has an option year for 2017. Stephen Piscotty played in left field last season, so he would be an option there.  Alex Gordon would also be a good signing; he could platoon with Holliday in 2016 and could take over left field permanently in 2017 should Holliday decide to retire after the 2016 season.

I am concerned, however, that there are no plans to upgrade the first base situation.  Platooning Moss and Adams is hardly a solution.  Adams was injured most of the last season and he was not hitting well even before the injury. Moss is not an everyday player, even in a platoon situation.  The Cards need an everyday first baseman with some power in his bat.  Chris Davis is still available and would be a good fit.

Starting pitching is a big issue that Mo needs to address.  As you know, Lynn is out for all of the 2016 season due to injury, and Lackey signed with the Cubs.  The Cards need a fifth starter.   Johnny Cueto might have been a good option, (even with bad feelings from Cardinal Nation about Cueto having punched Jason LaRue out of baseball forever) but he signed today with the Giants.  There are some other free agent pitchers still available, so Mo, please get a move on and sign one.

In closing, I’m tired of hearing my husband whine that the team is not going to spend any money and it’s getting old fast.  The only money I see being spent is for the new scoreboards at the stadium, and those aren’t even up yet.  How do I know? I can see the empty framework from my desk at work.   So Mo and Mr. DeWitt, please make some moves quickly.  Cardinal Nation and I have faith that the front office can whatever needs to be done to make this team even better in 2016, but we are impatient.

Thanks for reading! See you next time!

2016 Cardinals promotional schedule news

Yadi bobbleI know, I said at the end of my last post that this next post would be my annual WWLCB Holiday Gift Guide. However, when I got the press release below in my email today, I just had to share it.  There are some great giveaways next season.  It is the tenth anniversary of Busch Stadium III and the tenth anniversary of the Cards’ 2006 World Series win, so there will be giveaways highlighting those anniversaries.  In addition, instead of 25,000 items given away for each promotion, the Cards have bumped it up to 30,000 items per giveaway.  So you’ll have more chances to get the giveaway item you want, and hopefully, the lines won’t be as long to get into the stadium either.  Here’s all the details:

CARDINALS RELEASE 2016 PROMOTIONAL SCHEDULE
