Homestand highlights May 26 – June 3

1964 WS programThe fourth homestand (only the 4th? Wow!) of the 2014 season has some great promotions and a special salute to the 1964 World Series, which of course, the Cardinals won by beating the Yankees.  If you’d like to read a great book about the 1964 World Series, read David Halberstam’s October 1964. Here’s all the details on the homestand:

Traffic Alert

Illinois fans heading to home games for the rest of the year need to be aware that after May 27, the ramp from the westbound Poplar Street Bridge onto the interstate downtown will be closed for the next year while the Missouri Department of Transportation rebuilds it. Fans should consider using the 9th Street ramp from westbound I-64, the Eads Bridge or the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge and Tucker Boulevard to get to the game. In addition, using MetroLink and MetroBus t get to the game are very good options.

Don’t forget that Monday is Memorial Day.  At 3 PM in all time zones, there is a national moment of silence to remember those who gave their all for their country and for freedom.  Never forget that freedom isn’t free.

That’s all for now!  Thanks for reading and see you next time!

FANS CAN PURCHASE $4 TICKETS THANKS TO “CARDS WIN, YOU SAVE” PROMO

Select tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT at an 80% discount

ST. LOUIS, MO (May 20, 2014) – The St. Louis Cardinals announced that discounted tickets as part of the team’s Cards Win, You Save promotion will go on sale tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. CT. When the pitcher isn’t a pitcher

The gray sky over downtown St. Louis today matches their fans’ mood after last night’s game – a 17-5 loss, against the Cubs, which makes it completely embarrassing. Cubs fans will never let us live down last night’s game. The Cardinals are definitely not playing like a team who won the National League pennant last year. There’s an old saying that goes, “You have to hit bottom before you can get back up.” Hopefully, last night’s game was the bottom and the Cardinals will regroup and figure out what’s going wrong. It’s still early in the season, but the problems need to get fixed now before they get even worse. The Cards did make some roster moves today, putting last night’s starter, LHP Tyler Lyons, on the DL with a left shoulder strain (hmm, could this be why 7 runs were scored off him?), optioned RHP Eric Fortunato to Memphis, and recalled LHP Sam Freeman and RFP Jorge Rondon from Memphis.

There are many reasons for the Cardinals’ implosion, and they are being covered very well by my fellow Cardinals bloggers. But this post isn’t about that. Daniel Descalso was brought into the game to pitch last night, and it reminded me of a time when another utility player was brought in to pitch.

On May 14, 1988, the Cards played the Braves at Busch Stadium II. The game was tied 5-5 when manager Whitey Herzog brought in utility player Jose Oquendo (a/k/a “The Secret Weapon”) to pitch in the 16th inning after running out of pitchers. Amazingly, Jose pitched 3 scoreless innings before being tagged for a 2 run double by Ken Griffey, Jr. in the 19th inning, and he took the loss. Jose was the first non-pitcher in 20 years to get a decision. His pitching line was 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 BB, 1 SO. This was also one of Whitey’s many games where he pulled a double switch and had a pitcher play in the outfield, who in this case was Jose DeLeon. You can read more about this game in greater detail at the link here.

I remember this game well.  It was a Saturday night, and I was at a bar called Gilligan’s (which was not named after the TV show) shooting darts with my then-boyfriend Andrew and our buddy Gene. I looked up at the game on the bar’s TV to see how the game was going and was shocked to see Jose on the mound. I turned to Andrew and said, “Have I drunk too many beers or is that Jose Oquendo pitching?” My eyesight had not failed me, nor had I had too much to drink; it was indeed Jose on the mound.

My hubby (who was just a friend then; we didn’t start dating until 1990) was at the game that night with another friend of ours and her boyfriend. He made the mistake of mentioning before the game that he had never been to an extra inning game before. Bad move there, Mike!

Tomorrow is the 26th anniversary of the game in which Jose was called on to pitch. Will fans be saying 26 years from now, “Remember that horrible 17-5 loss to the Cubs when Daniel Descalso was brought in to pitch?” Probably not. Adam Wainwright is the starter tonight, and hopefully he will be able to turn the floundering S.S. Cardinals around and keep it from sinking.

Thanks for reading! See you next time!

The 2014 WWLCB Mother’s Day Gift Guide

A couple of years ago, I posted a Mother’s Day gift guide.  For some reason, I didn’t do one last year.  There are some new items that will make great Mother’s Day gifts for that special lady who is also a Cardinals fan, so I thought I’d pass them along while there is still time to shop.  Don’t wait too long to shop for your mother/grandmother/mother of your children (who, hopefully, is your wife) because Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 11.  If you are going to order from the Cardinals’ web site, tomorrow (May 7) is the last day you can order for 2 day guaranteed holiday delivery and May 8th is the last day for 1 day delivery.  Here’s some great choices for Mother’s Day gifts:

Every mother needs a purse to keep all those important things that she needs such as her cell phone, her wallet, snacks for the kids, etc.  The tony (not LaRussa) purse designer Dooney & Bourke has created some lovely Cardinals themed purses, one of which is pictured at left.  You can purchase them at the Team Store at Busch Stadium or you can click here to purchase.  Should these purses be too expensive for your budget, you can also find other purses and great accessories at the link above.  If you have a Cardinals Clubhouse store near you, you can find some great Cardinals merchandise for Mom there too.

If you know your mom’s shirt size, a Cardinals t-shirt or a jersey would be a welcome gift.  The shirt pictured at left is especially designed for Mother’s Day.  You can purchase this shirt at the link here.  Nike has a new collection of women’s Cardinals clothing that look really cool, including the shirt at right.  You can purchase this shirt and others from the Nike collection here.  A jersey with the name of Mom’s favorite Cardinals player would be a welcome gift as well.  You can purchase one here,  visit the Cardinals Team Store at Busch Stadium or the Cardinals Clubhouse stores.

Is the mom in your life a mom to be?  This cute shirt on the right is a great gift for the mom-to-be.  You can purchase this shirt here.

Mom needs a watch so she’s on time for where she needs to go, and what better watch to gift her with than a Cardinals watch?  This lovely watch, along with many others and with all different types of Cardinals jewelry can be purchased here.

If your mom is a little fluffy like me, there are some Cardinals clothing, an example of which can be seen at right.  You can purchase this hoodie and other plus size gear at the link here.

Moms love spending time with their kids, so why not take your mom to a Cardinals game?  You can purchase tickets here.   Don’t forget to take Mom to dinner at one of the nice restaurants at Ballpark Village before or after the game.  There will be a Mother’s Day buffet at Cardinals Nation.  Call 314-345-9880 to make a reservation.

St. Louis area JCPenney’s stores, Walmarts and Schnucks stores also have a limited supply of Cardinals gifts for those last minute shoppers out there.

I hope this post gave you some ideas as to what to get that mom/grandma in your life for Mother’s Day.  Thanks for reading!  See you next time!
